Jammu, October 18, 2019 (PPI-OT): Indian government has abolished the so-called Legislative Council, the Upper House of the legislature, of occupied Kashmir. Occupied Kashmir is under strict military siege since 5th August when India repealed the special status of the territory and divided into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Legislative Council was abolished in terms of Section 57 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019, introduced in Rajya Sabha, on August 5 and subsequently passed by the Indian Parliament.
The Legislative Council currently had 22 members against the total 36. Of these, the BJP had 10, the PDP eight, the National Conference three and the Congress one. As per the government order, the staff of the Council has been asked to report to the Governor-led General Administration Department (GAD) by October 22.
