In a significant move to address the widespread issue of undocumented small and medium enterprises (SMEs) having limited access to global trade, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) today launched a new grant program designed to facilitate their entry into international markets.

The SME Certification and International Accreditation Grant Program aims to provide comprehensive financial support to businesses to cover the expenses associated with obtaining necessary certifications, according to SMEDA sources.

This initiative, introduced under the guidance of the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Mr. Haroon Akhtar Khan, aligns with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision to bring informal enterprises into the formal sector and enhance national exports.

SMEDA management has assured that the scheme will be implemented with full transparency, with applications being processed strictly on a first-come, first-served basis to empower businesses with globally recognized credentials and boost their competitiveness.

The authority is particularly encouraging start-ups and women entrepreneurs to apply through a process described as convenient and transparent. Additionally, expert consultancy services are being made available to guide enterprises in becoming export-ready and improving their operational processes.

To further the initiative”s objectives, SMEDA is also conducting an awareness campaign and holding seminars to educate SMEs on the advantages of international compliance and export development.

The program targets a critical sector of the nation”s economy. Pakistan is home to approximately seven million small and medium economic establishments, which contribute 40 percent to the GDP, create 78 percent of non-agriculture employment, and generate 30 percent of the country”s exports.

Despite their significant economic contribution, a majority of these enterprises operate on a small, undocumented scale with restricted access to finance and international trade opportunities. Industry experts hope this certification initiative will bridge this gap, enabling eligible businesses to meet international standards and compete globally.
