Islamabad, January 06, 2018 (PPI-OT):Leading US newspaper, The New York Times has regretted President Trump’s precipitous way to announce his decision to suspend military assistance to Pakistan. In an editorial, the newspaper has underlined Pakistan’s strategic importance and urged President Donald Trump to explore whether more “constructive cooperation” with the South Asian country is still possible. The editorial said there were doubts whether Trump has a serious plan for managing the ramifications of this move. It said almost every military flight into Afghanistan goes through Pakistani airspace. Most supplies travel along Pakistani roads and rails. Pakistan can shut down American access at any moment.
It said in 2014, Pakistan’s army finally mounted a serious military campaign against the Pakistani Taliban and suffered many casualties. The New York Times said President Trump cannot afford to walk away from Pakistan, which has often provided vital intelligence. It said whether Pakistan will cooperate after freezing military assistance remains to be seen. Initially, some Pakistani officials reacted harshly but Foreign Ministry statement talked about the need for mutual respect and patience to address common threats.
