Old Pipri Pumping Station closed for 96 hours, Karachi faces a daily shortfall of 60 million gallons of water

Residents of several areas of the city will face severe disruption in water supply for the next four days due to the commencement of a major project by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation, causing a daily shortfall of 60 million gallons of water.

A spokesperson for the water utility confirmed today that a 96-hour shutdown is necessary to connect the new pipeline laid on the Old Pipri main under the KWSSIP with the existing water distribution system.

The engineering work, which has already begun, includes the installation of modern valves and is scheduled to be completed by Tuesday, January 13.

To facilitate the project, the Old Pipri Pumping Station has been shut down, temporarily suspending its contribution to the city’s water supply.

The spokesperson clarified that the New Pipri Pumping Station will continue to operate as usual. This means that despite the shortfall, the city’s total daily supply will be maintained at 590 million gallons of water against the usual approximately 650 million gallons.

Water availability in some areas of Malir, Shah Faisal, and Model Zone Town will be affected. The water supply to SPL and PIA will also be affected during this period.

The Landhi and Sherpao water hydrants have been closed in connection with the works.

The corporation has requested citizens to use water carefully during the project’s duration.

Authorities stated that a significant improvement in Karachi’s water supply system is expected after the connection is completed.
