The Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) highlighted the potential for a collaborative effort between Pakistan and China to produce and export high-quality sugar despite the recent flood devastation in Pakistan’s agricultural heartland. This initiative was discussed during a strategic meeting at the PCJCCI Secretariat.

Acting PCJCCI President, Zafar Iqbal, acknowledged the widespread damage from floods, particularly in Punjab and Sindh, emphasizing the necessity for modern, resilient agricultural practices. He stressed the importance of moving beyond traditional seeds susceptible to extreme weather, advocating for disease-free seedlings using techniques championed by the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS). This collaboration, he suggested, will solidify the bond between the two nations. Iqbal also highlighted tissue culture as a crucial tool for introducing resilient sugarcane varieties in flood-affected areas.

PCJCCI Executive Member, Amir Ali, reiterated the chamber’s dedication to fostering partnerships between Chinese and Pakistani specialists. He expressed confidence that joint efforts in sugarcane production could position both nations as major sugar suppliers. Ali stressed the urgency of implementing a joint sugarcane breeding program focused on flood-resistant varieties, viewing post-flood reconstruction as a chance for advancement.

PCJCCI Secretary General, Salahuddin Hanif, underscored the reciprocal advantages of enhanced agricultural cooperation. He suggested China could aid Pakistan in modernizing its sugar sector, while Pakistan could offer valuable insights into its distinct environmental conditions.
