Pakistan must urgently modernise its production and regulatory systems to capitalise on significant meat and rice export opportunities in the Middle East and Central Asia, according to the Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain.
During a high-level interactive meeting with exporters in the capital on Wednesday, the minister called for the establishment of a strong, export-oriented economy that also protects local farmers and industries.
Mr Hussain stressed that superior quality production and competitive pricing are fundamental to securing and expanding the nation”s share in global markets.
He identified meat, livestock, and rice as key sectors with considerable potential to increase exports. The minister noted that Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and other Gulf countries are ready to import Pakistani fresh meat and rice.
Furthermore, Mr Hussain revealed that Tajikistan has expressed a specific demand for approximately 100,000 tonnes of meat, underscoring the lucrative opportunities available.
To fully exploit these prospects, he asserted that Pakistan must align its production, processing, and regulatory frameworks with prevailing international standards. Responding to issues raised by industry representatives, the minister assured them of the government”s full support in resolving their problems and facilitating agricultural trade.
