Pakistan Moves to Cashless Passport System

The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports has announced that the cash-based fee collection system at all passport offices will be discontinued from July 1, 2026, and replaced entirely with digital payment methods.

The announcement was made during a briefing chaired by DG Immigration and Passports Muhammad Ali Randhawa, which was attended by zonal heads, according to an official information today. During the meeting, officials were informed that, after the deadline, passport fees would only be accepted through QR code-based digital payment systems.

The officials further stated that these reforms were part of broader government efforts aimed at digitising public services and modernising the national passport issuance system across Pakistan.

They said that a dedicated passport mobile application would soon be launched, enabling Pakistani citizens, both within the country and abroad, to submit their passport applications online. They added that the system would also allow applicants to receive their passports at their doorstep, thereby significantly streamlining and simplifying the process.

According to the authorities, the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports is expected to gradually transition toward issuing only e-passports in the future. However, they clarified that all existing machine-readable passports would remain valid until their date of expiry and would continue to be fully accepted.
