Pakistani Academics Recognized Among World’s Most-Cited Researchers in Prestigious Stanford Ranking

More than two dozen scholars affiliated with the Aga Khan University (AKU) have been included in Stanford University’s highly anticipated World’s Top 2% Scientists List for 2024, signaling a significant achievement for Pakistan”s academic community on the global stage.

According to a statement today, the annual compilation, widely regarded as one of the most respected global benchmarks for scientific impact, identifies leading researchers whose work holds substantial influence across numerous disciplines.

Rankings are determined using standardized citation data from Elsevier’s Scopus database. This methodology assesses the impact of a scientist’s work based on academic citations and the prestige of the peer-reviewed journals in which their findings are published.

The recognized fields span critical sectors such as health care services, education, climate science, economics, and the wellbeing of vulnerable populations. From Pakistan, over 20 distinguished individuals from AKU, including both faculty and alumni, were featured on this year’s roster. Notable academics on the list include Dr Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, Dr Salim S. Virani, Dr Romaina Iqbal, and Dr Jai Kumar Das, whose contributions have impacted quality of life both domestically and abroad.

Collectively, research from the institution”s scholars has influenced 5,347 policy documents across 25 countries, including guiding papers for major international bodies like the WHO, World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organisation, and UNICEF.

“These rankings reflect not only the incredible talent housed within AKU but also the University’s steadfast dedication to fostering an environment of excellence,” stated Dr Salim S. Virani, Vice Provost for Research at AKU. “We have consistently invested in state-of-the-art research facilities and fostered collaborations with world-leading institutions to encourage the pursuit of quality and innovation in our research.”

This international recognition underscores Pakistan”s expanding presence in global research and highlights the caliber of scientists produced by the nation”s research-focused institutions. Such placements strengthen the university”s capacity to attract top talent, secure funding, and forge new collaborations to advance its development mission.
