ISLAMABAD:Prime Minister Imran Khan will launch the select portion of country’s first ever comprehensive National Security Policy tomorrow (Friday).
According to official sources, the original version of the policy will remain classified, however a public version of the document will be released. The policy provides overall direction about national security, focusing on increasing national resource pie to strengthen Pakistan’s traditional and non-traditional security.
According to sources, the national security policy is a comprehensive document prepared with input from relevant federal departments, provincial governments and experts. The policy gives guidelines for economic, military and human security. It also dilates upon hybrid warfare, internal security and foreign policy.
In foreign policy, peace and economic diplomacy will be focused. Human security consists of population, health security, climate and water, food security and gender mainstreaming. The official sources said that an implementation framework has been prepared to ensure execution of the policy.
They revealed that the policy will be reviewed every year and every new government may also review it. The National Security Committee (NSC), under Prime Minister Imran Khan, had approved on December 27, 2021, Pakistan’s first-ever National Security Policy (NSP) 2022-2026 with the ultimate purpose of ensuring safety, security and dignity of citizens of Pakistan.
Prime Minister Imran Khan had emphasized that the security of Pakistan lies in the security of its citizens and reiterated that Pakistan was well prepared to meet any internal and external threats. According to the statements of Prime Minister and National Security Adviser Pakistan was shifting to a comprehensive national security framework, whereby the ultimate purpose of the national security was to ensure safety, security and dignity of citizen of Pakistan. To ensure this citizen-centric approach to security, the NSP put economic security at the core.
The NSP had been created through a whole-of-government effort over the last seven years, and included extensive consultations among federal government institutions, with all provinces, and with the academia and private sector.
It was highlighted that a detailed implementation framework had been created through which the National Security Division would review progress in collaboration with relevant ministries and departments. The NSA has been bound to present an implementation progress report of the National Security Policy to the National Security Committee every month.
