President Asif Zardari visits Mao Zedong’s ancestral home, pays tribute

President Asif Ali Zardari recently visited Shaoshan, the birthplace of Chairman Mao Zedong, according to a statement today on the social networking website X.

He paid tribute to China’s revolutionary leader. During his visit, the Pakistani head highlighted the important role of historical consciousness in national development and emphasized understanding the factors that contributed to the formation of modern China.

The visiting dignitary was welcomed by Senior Party Leader Li Jiang and Zhang Zhihui, Director of Shaoshan Administration. They briefed the President on the life and struggle of Chairman Mao Zedong, highlighting his early years in Shaoshan and their impact on his political philosophy. Additionally, the importance of commemorative institutions in preserving historical records and promoting public understanding of China’s revolutionary past was also highlighted.

After a ceremony at Statue Square, where President Zardari laid a floral wreath at the statue of Chairman Mao, he proceeded to the Mao Zedong Memorial Museum. Here, he was provided with information about the life, ideas, and political legacy of the founding figure of the People’s Republic of China, and he viewed historical artifacts, documents, and photographs illustrating key periods of China’s revolutionary narrative.

The Pakistani President explicitly acknowledged Chairman Mao Zedong’s pivotal role in China’s historical transformation. He lauded the revolutionary leader’s part in the nation’s struggles, unity, and overall development. He reiterated the necessity of preserving such sites to understand the elements that shaped modern China and underscored the importance of historical insight in enhancing national development.

Accompanying the President during his visit were Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, Senior Minister Sindh Sharjeel Inam Memon, Ali Hassan Brohi, Special Assistant to Chief Minister Sindh for Investment and Public-Private Partnership Projects Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar, Chief Secretary Sindh, Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Jiang Zaidong, and Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi.
