Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif underscored the importance of constructive media criticism on government policies as a crucial element for improving governance. Speaking at a meeting with the Pakistan Broadcasters’ Association in Islamabad, he highlighted the mutual trust between the government and the media, asserting that freedom of expression is fully supported in the country.

According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Prime Minister acknowledged the media’s role as the fourth pillar of the state and welcomed its constructive criticism. He shared insights into the country’s economic progress, stating that after stabilizing the economy, the government has resumed efforts to achieve economic growth, which had been stalled since 2018.

During the discussions, Sharif introduced URAAN Pakistan, a locally developed program aimed at economic development, which seeks collaboration with media and stakeholders for success. He also expressed appreciation for international support, which has helped Pakistan avoid default and embark on a path of development.

Sharif credited the government’s economic team for recent reductions in inflation and interest rates and highlighted the positive impact of business-friendly policies on exports and the agricultural and industrial sectors. He mentioned ongoing reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue, including the introduction of a faceless customs clearance system to boost tax revenues and transparency.

The Prime Minister also addressed government efforts to curb the smuggling of essential goods, which have positively impacted the national budget. He noted increased remittances as a sign of overseas Pakistanis’ confidence in government policies.

Sharif touched on foreign policy improvements, asserting that relations with friendly nations are strengthening, leading to diplomatic successes. He reiterated the nation’s commitment to eradicating terrorism alongside the armed forces and highlighted progress on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor projects.

Discussing the political climate, Sharif criticized a specific group for attempting to destabilize the capital, claiming they oppose Pakistan’s economic stability. He emphasized the government’s dedication to providing international-standard education and opportunities for the youth, whom he described as the country’s greatest asset.

The Pakistan Broadcasters’ Association commended the Prime Minister’s efforts to negotiate with Independent Power Producers to lower electricity prices and urged the government to facilitate political stability. The meeting was attended by Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Chairman of the Pakistan Broadcasters Association Mian Amir Mehmood, and other officials.
