Pulwama, Shopian shut to mourn youth’s death

Srinagar, January 31, 2018 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown is being observed in south Kashmir’s Pulwama and Shopian districts to mourn the killing of a third youth, who succumbed to his injuries, today. The youth, Rayees Ahmed Ganai, a resident of Narpora, Shopian, was injured in the firing of Indian troops on protesters in Ganowpora area of Shopian on Saturday and succumbed at Soura Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar, this morning.

All shops and business establishments are closed in Shopian and Pulwama districts while traffic is thin. Two youth, Javaid Ahmad and Suhail Lone were killed after the troops opened fire on protesters in Ganowpora on Saturday. Rayees had sustained critical injuries after being hit by a bullet on his head.

Meanwhile, clashes between protesters and personnel of Indian forces erupted in Pulwama against the killing of Rayees. Youth took to the streets and hurled stones on the forces’ personnel deployed in the town. The troops fired teargas shells on the protesters.

On the other hand, shutdown was also observed in Sopore area of Baramulla district against the killing of a goldsmith, Tariq Ahmad Malik, whose body was retrieved from River Jhelum. Tariq Malik, 31, of Kalaroos Kupwara, who was putting up in Sopore was murdered after his abduction from his shop in Chhota Bazar Sopore on December 26. Traders Federation Sopore had called for the shutdown today in Sopore town in solidarity with the slain goldsmith.
