Qatar has given the green light for immediate discussions on defence and defence production cooperation with Pakistan, a major outcome of a high-level meeting on Wednesday between Qatari Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari. The agreement marks a significant step in deepening strategic ties between the two nations.

During the summit in Doha, President Zardari put forward a proposal to expand collaboration in the defence sector. The Amir accepted the offer and promptly instructed Qatari authorities to commence discussions with their Pakistani counterparts, signaling a clear intent to fast-track the partnership.

The two leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to bolstering the multifaceted relationship between their countries. The engagement covered a wide spectrum of potential collaborations, including enhanced cooperation in political, economic, agricultural, and cultural domains.

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani welcomed President Zardari, expressing his appreciation for the enduring friendship with Pakistan. He praised the significant contributions of the Pakistani expatriate community to Qatar’s progress and development, stating a desire to increase the number of Pakistani professionals working in the Gulf state.

President Zardari conveyed greetings from Pakistan and acknowledged Qatar’s global standing in humanitarian diplomacy. He commended the Amir’s leadership, particularly regarding advocacy for a ceasefire and aid in Gaza, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s diplomatic support for Doha’s sovereignty.

The Qatari leader welcomed the recent Pakistan-Saudi Arabia defence pact, describing it as a “timely and important step.” He also observed Pakistan’s unique geopolitical position, maintaining strategic relations with China, Western nations, and the Gulf states concurrently.

Economic opportunities were also a key focus, with President Zardari highlighting prospects for partnership in agriculture and food security. He invited greater Qatari investment into Pakistan, expressing confidence in the continued growth of bilateral trade.

The discussions also touched upon regional stability. The Amir conveyed his hope that Pakistan and Afghanistan would overcome current difficulties and improve their bilateral relations. President Zardari recognized Qatar’s constructive role in facilitating the UN-led Doha Process on Afghanistan.

The meeting concluded with President Zardari extending an invitation to His Highness the Amir to visit Pakistan. The Amir accepted the invitation and indicated the visit would likely take place early next year. Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was also present at the engagement.
