Rangers called in Lahore amid tense political situation

LAHORE:Punjab government on Wednesday called Rangers in Lahore for 15 days to avert any untoward incident in the aftermath of deteriorating political situation arising out of no-confidence motion against Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Assembly.

According to a notification issued by the Punjab government, the Rangers personnel will be deployed for security in the provincial capital for 15 days. Anyone found playing havoc with the city’s peace would be taken into custody, the notification warned. Those creating law and order situation could be detained under 16 Section of Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).

A tough contest is expected between Opposition Leader in Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz and ruling PTI’s nominee for the coveted slot of the chief minister Pervez Elahi. The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday submitted a no-confidence motion against its own deputy speaker of the provincial assembly. Similarly, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) today also submitted a no-confidence motion against Punjab Assembly Speaker Pervaiz Elahi who is a candidate for chief minister slot.
