Following a directive from the Sindh High Court, a brown bear named Rano is scheduled for a sensitive, early-morning relocation from the Karachi Zoo to a new home in Islamabad, with final preparations now complete for the intricate operation.
The move comes after a detailed review of the animal”s physical and mental fitness, which was the focus of a high-level official meeting held on Tuesday.
After the meeting, a Technical Inspection Team and the court-appointed supervisor, Chief Conservator of Sindh Wildlife Javed Mahar, visited Rano’s enclosure. They conducted a final assessment of the bear”s behavior and overall condition, documenting the necessary records for the transfer.
Following the assessment, access to the enclosure has been restricted. The only individual permitted entry is committee member and renowned filmmaker Mahera Omer, who will record the moment when joint teams from the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board and Karachi Zoo guide Rano into her transport crate.
Committee Secretary Yusra Sami Askari expressed gratitude to the Pakistan Air Force for its contribution of a C-130 aircraft to ensure a swift and safe journey. Askari noted that this significant gesture will highlight Pakistan’s national efforts toward animal welfare and protection to the international community.
According to the official schedule, the relocation operation will begin at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday when Rano departs the zoo. The bear will then be flown from PAF Base Faisal to Islamabad.
Media representatives have been requested to act responsibly while documenting the delicate process on the road. While entry into the zoo will be prohibited during the transfer, authorities have assured that essential visuals for public awareness will be shared with the press via WhatsApp.
