SAPM on Petroleum Nadeem Babar chairs a stakeholder consultation meeting at Ministry of Energy

Islamabad, October 07, 2020 (PPI-OT): Mr. Nadeem Babar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minster (SAPM) on Petroleum chaired a stakeholder consultation meeting at the Ministry of Energy, Petroleum Division today with the current and the interested LNG terminal operators. The meeting was also attended by the Secretary and senior officers of Petroleum Division. The Companies including Energas Terminals Pvt. Ltd, Engro Elengy Terminal Ltd, Exxon Mobile Pakistan Pvt. Ltd, Mitsubishi Corporation, Pakistan Gas Port Consortium Limited, Tabeer Energy Private Limited, Pakistan State Oil Company Limited, Pakistan LNG terminal Limited, Government Holdings (PVT) Limited and Interstate Gas Systems Ltd attended the meeting.

The meeting was held to consult the companies currently operating LNG terminals in Pakistan and also those with upcoming planned investments in this sector, so as to get better visibility of their projects in terms of design, capacity and schedule in order to align the gas transmission and distribution network being established by the Ministry of Energy, Petroleum Division in compliance of the decision of the Honourable Supreme Court of Pakistan to start work on North South Gas Pipeline within six months of 13th August 2020.

SAPM appreciated the interest of the companies to invest in LNG supply terminals in the country and noted that given the increasing energy needs of the country, which are constrained by depleting gas reserves and low FDI in E and P sector, LNG can improve energy economics and sustainability of supply for domestic and industrial consumers of gas.

He urged the LNG terminal companies to inform the Petroleum Division of any constraints they had while moving towards Financial Close of their projects going forward, which can be facilitated by the Ministry, to ensure that the scheduling estimates of gas supply and allied gas pipeline infrastructure can be as accurate as possible. A constructive discussion took place and all companies showed an encouraging response to bring online their onshore and offshore LNG terminals as soon as possible in Pakistan.
