Secretary General Economic Cooperation Organization meeting with Foreign Minister on 14th March 2019

Islamabad, March 15, 2019 (PPI-OT): Dr. Hadi Soleimanpour, Secretary General Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) is on his three-day official trip to Pakistan. This was his maiden visit since he assumed responsibilities as the Secretary General ECO.

The Secretary General called on the Foreign Minister. The two sides discussed challenges faced by the ECO, its Secretariat and ECO Specialized agencies. The Foreign Minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to ECO and its processes and assured Secretary General of full support in early operationalization of Agreements/MoUs. Achievements of the Organization in the fields of education, culture and S and T and implementation of certain important agreements in different fields were appreciated and it was agreed to fast track further collaboration.

Dr. Hadi also discussed issues related to ECO including social and cultural cooperation among Member countries, infrastructure development agenda of ECO, regional connectivity through road and rail network, trade liberalization, early operationalization of the ECO Trade Agreement (ECOTA), ECO Transit Transport Framework Agreement (TTFA) and ECO Trade and Development Bank (ETDB).

Foreign Minister Qureshi emphasized the importance of visa liberalization and promotion of tourism between the ECO countries. He said that such measures had the potential to bring people of the region closer and generate socio-economic benefits as well. The meeting was followed by Lunch hosted by the Foreign Minister for the Secretary General. The Ambassadors of the ECO member countries were also invited.
