Security Fears Derail Balochistan Bye-Election

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has suspended the upcoming bye-election in the NA-256 Khuzdar constituency, citing a grave law and order situation in the region. The poll was originally scheduled to take place on 5 April 2026.

According to a report today, the decision was a direct consequence of a request from the Provincial Government of Balochistan to postpone the electoral contest.

The provincial government’s plea for a delay was based on the “prevailing law and order situation in the area of the constituency,” prompting the ECP to halt the proceedings.

In response, the Commission has summoned the province”s top officials for a direct consultation. The Chief Secretary and the Inspector General of Police for Balochistan are now required to appear in person to brief the Commission on the security challenges.

The entire election schedule for the NA-256 Khuzdar poll remains suspended pending this high-level security review.
