Mogadishu The Somali Ministry of Post, Telecom and Technology (MPTT) hosted a training workshop on Spectrum Management System For Developing Countries (SMS4DC), co-organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on March 14-18.
Ahmed Boraud, a trainer from ITU, said the objective of the workshop is to build knowledge and skills of participants who can effectively use ITU’s SMS4DC tool for efficient spectrum management. He added that the training is essentially targeted spectrum managers and the users of SMS4DC tool.
MPTT Director General Abdulaziz Isaq said this is a historic moment for Somalia’s ICT sector as the National Telecom Institute (NTI) hosted the first ITU-organized workshop in 1991 when the civil war broke out. He explained that the program will pave the way for more training programs by the ITU in Somalia.
General Manager for National Communications Authority (NCA) Abdi Sheikh Ahmed stated that the training workshop was timely for the country that has recently established a regulatory body, which is currently undertaking reforms in the sector including spectrum.
Ahmed noted that the training program was planned with a view to focusing on practical exercises. He urged the participants to make use of the knowledge and skills they acquired and keep in touch with the expert on any issue that may arise while using the software.
I would like to thank the ITU, particularly the Arab Regional Office, for making this program a reality. We hope ITU will provide us further training programs as we build our human capacity in regulating the sector, Ahmed said.
Founded in 1865 in Paris, the International Telecommunication Union is the oldest among all the 15 specialized agencies of the United Nations. It coordinates the shared global use of the radio spectrum, promotes international cooperation in assigning satellite orbits, works to improve telecommunication infrastructure in the developing world, and assists in the development and coordination of worldwide technical standards.
