Speaker Ayaz Sadiq pledges new legislation to protect the press

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq today expressed his firm resolve to promote media freedom and enact effective legislation to protect media professionals. He also stressed the imperative need to ensure a safe operational environment for journalists across the country.

The National Assembly chief paid tribute to the journalistic community for their exemplary fact-based reporting, particularly noting their contributions during what he termed “the battle for truth.” Mr Sadiq underscored that free, secure, and responsible journalism remains vital for maintaining democratic stability.

He elaborated that by delivering timely and precise information, media practitioners play a crucial role in ensuring transparency and accountability within society. The Speaker highlighted the press”s fundamental role in strengthening representative governance and fostering public awareness.

A special homage was extended to those journalists who made the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their professional duties. Mr Sadiq further affirmed that the Constitution of Pakistan unequivocally guarantees freedom of expression.

Addressing contemporary challenges, the Speaker noted that in the digital era, the significance of conscientious journalism has amplified in countering the proliferation of misinformation. He asserted that fact-based reporting is paramount for upholding national interest and promoting social harmony.

To effectively combat the spread of unverified news, Speaker Sadiq emphasised the necessity of promoting investigative journalism.
