Spike in Driving License Acquisition in Punjab Following Traffic Law Changes

As a result of the recent campaign to enforce amended traffic laws, 2.5 million citizens across Punjab have obtained driving licenses in the past three weeks, a development reviewed in a high-level police meeting on Monday.

The meeting, chaired by Inspector General (IG) Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, reviewed the impact of the new laws introduced by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. According to official data presented, the strict enforcement has led to a significant decrease in road accidents across the province.

Notably, 23 districts reported a zero accident rate, and a remarkable 82% reduction in head injuries was recorded due to the increased use of helmets by motorcyclists.

During the meeting, IG Punjab directed senior officers to intensify the indiscriminate crackdown against traffic law violations. This directive specifically targets the use of non-standard number plates and overloading in commercial vehicles.

In addition to traffic management, the IG issued further orders for strict action against any personnel involved in drug dealing, corruption, or abuse of power. He also directed strict enforcement of laws related to Basant, enhancement of security protocols for Chinese nationals, and improvement of the 15 helpline’s response time.

The meeting was attended by the Additional IG Special Branch, Additional IG Operations, DIG Traffic, and the Chief Traffic Officer Lahore. Regional Police Officers (RPOs), District Police Officers (DPOs), and other traffic officials participated via video link.
