Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has become the most prolific left-arm pacer in Test cricket history, eclipsing the long-standing record of Pakistan’s Wasim Akram during a stellar performance on the opening day of the second Ashes Test against England.
According to International Cricket Council’s report today, the 35-year-old achieved the milestone at the Gabba, claiming remarkable figures of 6/71 to restrict the tourists. This performance advanced his career tally to 418 Test wickets, surpassing Akram”s former benchmark of 414 scalps.
The legendary Pakistani quick wasted no time in congratulating his successor, taking to social media to express his admiration for the Australian”s achievement. “Super Starc! Proud of you, mate,” Akram wrote on the platform X. “Your incredible hard work sets you apart, and it was only a matter of time before you crossed my tally of wickets.”
In a gracious message, Akram added, “I am pleased to give this to you! Go well, and keep soaring to new heights in your stellar career.”
Despite the historic accomplishment, an exhausted Starc remained humble when speaking to the media after the day’s play concluded with England at 325/9. He insisted that Akram remains the superior bowler in his eyes.
“I”ll reflect on it later, Wasim”s still a far better bowler than I am,” Starc stated. “So as far as I”m concerned he’s still the pinnacle of left-armers and certainly right up there with bowlers to ever play the game.”
Starc’s new record places him fourth on Australia”s all-time list of Test wicket-takers, behind only Shane Warne (708), Glenn McGrath (563), and Nathan Lyon (562).
