Pakistan-Japan Friendship Forum Launched; Inaugural ceremony held at the residence of Ambassador of Japan

Islamabad, September 25, 2018 (PPI-OT): To promote the cultural relations and to further strengthen people-to-people contacts between Japan and Pakistan, Pakistan-Japan Friendship Forum (PJFF) has been established in Islamabad aiming to cement further the friendly relationships between the two countries. Pakistan-Japan Friendship Forum is founded by its Chairman Mr. Khalid Malik, a renowned businessman, with a vision to further strengthen the friendship between Japan and Pakistan.

The inauguration ceremony was held at the official residence of H.E. Mr. Takashi Kurai, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, and was attended by the representatives of Pakistani cultural organizations, members of business community, former Pakistani alumni of Japanese universities and other important socio-cultural personalities of the capital city.

Ambassador Kurai while speaking at the inaugural ceremony congratulated Mr. Khalid Malik for making tremendous efforts to establish Pakistan- Japan Friendship Forum and hoped that this forum will help further strengthening the existing friendly relations between Japan and Pakistan. Ambassador Kurai said people-to-people contacts are the very foundation for the whole relationship between two countries and Pakistan Japan Friendship Forum has been established to further promote these relationships.

Ambassador Kurai hoped that the new forum of friendship will do its best for further deepening the bilateral relations between the two countries. Ambassador Kurai at the occasion also paid glowing tributes to Mr. Ghulam Abbas, former minister of Punjab Government, for his dedication for promoting Pakistan-Japan relations and thanked him for donating WADAIKO drums to Islamabad Japanese School which were made in Sialkot.

Chairman Pakistan-Japan Friendship Forum Mr. Khalid Malik while speaking at the occasion said that Pakistan and Japan have potential to further promote their relationships in all fields including culture, business, education and sports. He thanked the Japanese Ambassador for his support in establishing PJFF and expressed his resolve to further strengthen the friendly relations between the two countries through the platform of this forum.

The Government of Japan and UNODC Country Office in Pakistan stands committed to build the operational capacity of Anti-Narcotics Force

Islamabad, September 13, 2018 (PPI-OT): Mr. Cesar Guedes, the UNODC Country Office Representative in Pakistan and Mr.Yusuke Shindo, Minister/Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Japan, handed over 200 drugs and precursors identification kits to Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) during the handing-over ceremony at ANF Headquarters, Rawalpindi.

The UNODC test kits, developed and produced by the Laboratory and Scientific Section, Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs, was one of the agreed deliverables under the Japanese funded UNODC project, which is aimed at strengthening border security against illicit drug trafficking and related transnational organised crime. This is also part of UNODC efforts to enhance the operational capacity of drug law enforcement, specially ANF, in line with its Country Programme (2016 – 2019). Senior officials from Embassy of Japan, UNODC and ANF were present at the occasion.

Brig. Sheikh Ali Muhammad, Chief of Staff, ANF thanked the Government and people of Japan and UNODC for their continuous support to the Government of Pakistan, especially ANF, for building their operational capacity in countering numerous existing and emerging challenges posed by drug trafficking in the country and the region. Lastly, Major General Nawaz assured his continued support in all mutual endeavours.

Mr. Cesar Guedes, the UNODC Country Office Representative in Pakistan, said that UNODC along with its international donors especially Japan is committed to strengthening operational capacities of ANF and other LEAs for addressing the drug trafficking and global organised crime issues through proactive responses. Mr. Guedes thanked the Government of Pakistan for committing to smooth implementation of the Japanese funded project activities (2016-2019) and specially thanked the Government of Japan for its commitment and generous financial support for this very important project.

Mr. Shindo, Minister/Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Japan,, acknowledged the efforts done by UNODC and ANF and highlighted the importance of these drugs and precursors identification kits to enhance ANF capacity for effective interdiction and investigation of illicit drugs. He reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to helping Pakistan combat all types of transnational organised crime including illicit drug trafficking which hinder the economic development and over all prosperity of the country. He noted that enhancing the border security between Pakistan and Afghanistan is crucial as the stability of the region is essential to the national security of Pakistan.

UNODC is leading global efforts against drug trafficking and is the guardian of all international conventions on drugs and transnational organised crime. UNODC Country Office in Pakistan has been active for over 35 years and works in close collaboration with the Government of Pakistan. Its mandate is to assist the national institutions in their efforts to overcome the challenges associated with transnational organised crime, thereby contributing towards the nation’s development.

Pre-Departure Orientation for the Scholarship Awardees held at the Embassy of Japan in Islamabad

Islamabad, September 10, 2018 (PPI-OT): The Embassy of Japan organized a pre-departure orientation for 15 Pakistani scholarship awardees who would be leaving for Japan this month to study in Japanese universities under various scholarships programs fully funded by the Government of Japan. The programs under which these scholarships have been awarded to Pakistani students this year include MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Research Scholarship 2018 (2-5 years, until their Research is complete), MEXT Teachers Training Scholarship Program (18 months duration), Young Leaders’ Program (1year duration).

In Teachers Training Program (TTP), 1 female teacher has been selected, in Young Leaders Program (YLP) 3 government officials, whereas 18 students from across Pakistan have received direct MEXT Research scholarships 2018 upon the recommendation of public sector universities in Japan. Earlier in March this year, eleven Pakistani students, who were awarded MEXT Research Scholarship 2018 through the Embassy of Japan in Pakistan, have already joined their respective universities in Japan. The Embassy of Japan in Pakistan annually selects Pakistani students for Japanese MEXT Research Scholarship Program for Masters and Ph.D. studies at prestigious public sector universities in Japan.

Alumni of Japanese university Dr. Yasar Ayaz who presently heads the Robotics department at NUST shared his knowledge and experience of studying and living in Japan with the scholarship awardees at the pre-departure orientation session held today at the embassy.

H.E. Mr. Takashi Kurai, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, while speaking at the occasion congratulated the new scholarship awardees and expressed his hope that this scholarship program would prove useful for them in enhancing their knowledge and educational qualifications. Ambassador Kurai hoped further that the scholarship recipients would utilize the knowledge and expertise that they would acquire in Japan for the future development of Pakistan and that they would always become bridges of friendship between the two countries.

Japan provides 2.4 billion Japanese Yen to strengthen Weather Forecasting and Human Resource Development in Pakistan

Islamabad, August 31, 2018 (PPI-OT):The Government of Japan has agreed to extend to the Government of Pakistan the grant assistance of the two projects “the Project for the Installation of Weather Surveillance Radar in Multan City” worth of around 2.1 billion Japanese Yen (2.3 billion Rs) and “the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship” worth of around 330 million Japanese Yen (360 million Rs) on the 31st of August, 2018.

The Notes to this effect were signed and exchanged between H.E. Mr. Takashi Kurai, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan and H.E. Mr. Ahmad Hanif Orakzai, Additional Secretary for Economic Affairs Division, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in the presence of H.E. Mr. Kazuyuki Nakane, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, H.E. Mr. Asad Umar, Minister for Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs, Dr. Ghulam Rasul, Director General of Pakistan Meteorological Department and Mr. Yasuhiro Tojo, Chief Representative of JICA Pakistan Office.

At the signing ceremony, H.E. Mr. Kazuyuki Nakane stated “Since the diplomatic relationship between the two countries was established in 1952, Japan has been supporting Pakistan’s stable and sustainable growth. Under the strong leadership of the new Prime Minister H.E. Imran Khan along with the leadership for economic development, particularly, the new Finance Minister H.E. Asad Umar, we believe that “Naya Pakistan” will be definitely realized with relevant measures to be taken by the new government and hope that these two projects will be of some help for further development of Pakistan and contribute to further strengthen the friendly relationship and cooperation between Japan and Pakistan”

As this project for the Installation of Weather Surveillance Radar in Multan City, Japan places a high priority to disaster management in its development assistance for Pakistan. Including the project signed today, the total amount of assistance for weather forecasting of Pakistan has reached about 10 billion Japanese Yen (Rs. 10 billion).

So far Japan has supported the installation of 4 weather radars in the cities of Islamabad, Karachi, Dera Ismail Khan and Rahim Yar Khan. With this project in Multan, out of 8 weather radars altogether in Pakistan, 5 will be supported by Japan and will cover 80% of the country and benefit 90% of the whole population. The weather radar network will surely contribute to further strengthening the weather forecasting capability in Pakistan and help Pakistan become more resilient to future natural disasters.

With regard to “the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship”, Japan has been providing its technical cooperation to Pakistan for human resource development since 1954 through having received more than 6,500 fellows in Japan so far.

Under “the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship”, scholarship will be offered to Pakistani officers and they will study at universities in Japan for Master’s / Doctor’s Degree, with an objective to resolve development challenges in Pakistan. It is expected that the Pakistani officers who will obtain their degrees will play a pivotal and note-worthy role in the socio-economic development of Pakistan in the future, and thereby strengthen the existing cordial friendly relationship and cooperation between Japan and Pakistan.

Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan inaugurates Upgraded Japanese Language Department at NUML Islamabad

Islamabad, May 14, 2018 (PPI-OT): H.E. Mr. Takashi Kurai, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, today inaugurated the upgraded department of the Japanese language at the National University of Modern Languages which was funded by the government of Japan. The Government of Japan had extended a grant of US$ 83,064 to National University of Modern Languages (NUML) under its Grant Assistance for the Improvement of Learning Environment of Japanese Language Department at NUML.

The inauguration ceremony to this effect was held today, 14th May 2018 at the National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad where the Ambassador Takashi Kurai unveiled the plaque of newly upgraded Japanese language department.Maj. Gen (R)Zia Uddin Najam, Rector, National University of Modern Languages, was also present at the occasion.

Under “The Project for Improvement of Learning Environment of Japanese Language Department, NUML”, the grant provided by the Government of Japan was utilized to purchase equipment for the Japanese Language Department at NUML such as IT equipment, teaching and learning materials, air-Conditioning equipment, furniture and a computer server for distance learning education of Japanese language.

Ambassador Kurai while speaking at the inaugural ceremony commended the efforts of the NUML on successful completion of the project. He said that developing educational facilities is one of the priorities of the Government of Japan through its grant assistance and today’s assistance for the improvement of learning environment of Japanese language department is one such example. Ambassador Kurai expressed the hope that the improvement of learning environment would greatly benefit the students of Japanese language department of NUML as well as distant learners of Japanese language.

The Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan inaugurates Water Filtration Plants in District Faisalabad, Punjab

Islamabad, May 08, 2018 (PPI-OT): H.E. Mr. Takashi Kurai, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, inaugurated 7 water filtration plants in Tehsil Samundari, District Faisalabad on Tuesday, 8th May 2018. The Government of Japan has contributed US$ 83,200 to Human Appeal International, Pakistan – a Non-Governmental Organization, to provide safe and clean drinking water to local residents. The inauguration ceremony was also attended by NGOs, government representatives and members of local communities.

The financial assistance from the Government of Japan has enabled Human Appeal to improve access of local community to safe drinking water by installation of water filtration plants in 6 different villages of Tehsil Samundari, District Faisalabad. Before the installation of water filtration plants, local residents were using contaminated underground water, causing water-borne diseases. Installation of water filtration plants has enabled local communities to overcome the issue of contaminated water.

Human Appeal International has been serving people of Pakistan in multiple sectors, including WASH, livelihood and economic development, education, disaster risk management and welfare of orphans since 2005.

H.E. Mr. Takashi Kurai, in his speech congratulated Human Appeal on successful completion of the project. He stressed upon the right of common people to access clean drinking water, especially when Pakistan suffers from water scarcity. He also hoped that this project would not only contribute to improving living standard of local communities but also to strengthening further the existing friendly relations between the people of Japan and Pakistan.

The Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan inaugurates the Rehabilitation Center for Drug Addicts in Gujranwala, Punjab

Islamabad, May 07, 2018 (PPI-OT): H.E. Mr. Takashi Kurai, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, on Monday, 7th May 2018 inaugurated a treatment and rehabilitation center for drug addicts in the District Gujranwala, Punjab. The Government of Japan has contributed US$ 83,040 to Mian Afzal Trust Hospital– a Non-Governmental Organization, striving to prevent drug use and providing rehabilitation services for affected children and adults. The inauguration ceremony was also attended by the NGO’s representatives, government officials and members of local communities.

The financial assistance from the Government of Japan was essential for Mian Afzal Trust Hospital to expand its rehabilitation services to women and children in the area. Previously, the 125-bed Trust hospital in Gujranwala had provided rehabilitation services for male drug users only. Now, with the new funding from the Government of Japan, the Trust has equipped its hospital with an additional 20-bed treatment facility which will be used exclusively by women and children.

Working since 2001, Mian Afzal Trust Hospital has expanded its outreach to a number of districts in Punjab province, where it provides services aimed at reduction of drug use, prevention of HIV/Aids and treatment of male, female and child drug users.

H.E. Mr. Takashi Kurai, in his speech at the inaugural ceremony, commended the efforts of Mian Afzal Trust on successful completion of the project. He stressed upon the need of consistent efforts to provide quality rehabilitation services for drug users so that they actively participate in the development of the country. He also expressed his hope that this project would not only contribute to improving the lives of drug addicts but also strengthening the existing friendly relations between the people of Japan and Pakistan.
