Pakistan calls for enhanced dialogue and cooperation on migration issues

Islamabad, February 21, 2019 (PPI-OT): Addressing the 6th Ministerial Conference of the Budapest Process on migration issues in Istanbul, Pakistan’s Minister of State for Interior, Mr. Shehryar Afridi stressed the need for enhanced dialogue and cooperation between countries of origin, transit and destination, says a press release received here today from Ankara, Turkey. The Minister underscored that to effectively address migration, law enforcement cooperation needs to be supplemented by efforts to address underlying drivers of irregular migration and opening more avenues for legal migration.

He also invited attention to assess the impact of restrictive visa regime and stringent border controls on the entire cycle of migration. The Minister also called for countering the tendencies of xenophobia, racial profiling and Islamophobia in destination and cautioned against scapegoating migrants for narrow political gains. Minister Shehryar Afridi said Pakistan is both a country of origin as well as destination for migrants. He added Pakistan continued to host, on an average, more than a million irregular migrants from neighbouring countries and the region for over four decades.

He said these migrants have enjoyed social mobility, employment opportunities and access to health and education. He said that Pakistan has effective migration policies that were implemented through robust legal and administrative frameworks. On the sidelines of the Conference, Minister Shehryar Afridi held meetings with the Ministers of Interior of Turkey, Greece, Croatia as well as the Minister for Refugees of Afghanistan, and exchanged views on various aspects of migration.

Meeting to expedite work on Railway Freight Corridor in Karachi

Islamabad, February 21, 2019 (PPI-OT): “Ministers in the incumbent government are vigilant, hardworking and honest in their duty. This how the leadership of Imran Khan will bring change. From dawn to dusk, I am trying my best to transform Maritime operations of Pakistan into effective, efficient and at par with international standards” observed Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Zaidi. “Among many feathers in our cap including, Night Navigation at Port Qasim, a drive against corruption and the docking of two LNG ships-not once, but twice-at the same tide and day at Port Qasim, The Railway Freight corridor is going to be a promising opportunity for both of the ministries-maritime and railways-to facilitate the business community”.

The Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs called on Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed yesterday in Islamabad. Chairman, Port Qasim, Asad Rafi Chandna, Chairman Pakistan National Shipping Corporation Rizwan Ahmed and member advisory council Ministry of Maritime Affairs Mahmood Maulvi also accompanied the Minister in the meeting. Framework to expedite the work on Railway Freight Corridor was agreed upon at the meeting. The said corridor is a part of MOUs signed last week in the visits conducted by the Minister at the Karachi Port Trust.

Karachi Port Trust will prepare the feasibility reports of the project and get its approval from Board. Work on the project will commence after the approval. Efficient freight movement to and from the ports is extremely important to facilitate imports and exports. The current hindrances are due to negligence of the previous governments who tried to fudge the figures and pocket commission through useless projects. The current government is clear in its vision to facilitate the business community to revamp exports. The said goal is only possible by cooperation among government organizations.

Indian malevolence can be perilous for the region: Ghulam Sarwar Khan

Islamabad, February 20, 2019 (PPI-OT): Indian malevolence can be perilous for the region. New Pakistan is on Indian nerves. No one can cause sprints in Pakistan’s way of progress. Accusations against Pakistan in Pulwama incident are India’s struggle to hide its inefficiency. This was said by Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Federal Minister for Petroleum on Wednesday. He said this in context to Saudi Crown Prince Visit and India’s scuffle to cause hurdles in international investment in Pakistan. He said Pakistan is a peace loving country, and we gave a lot of sacrifices for maintaining peace in the region.

Pakistan’s army and civil society has played an important role in war on terror. He added that it is evident that Pakistan always respects sovereignty of its neighbouring countries. India is accusing Pakistan baselessly in this matter. India should know that it is a new Pakistan now and a new Government with a new mind-set that does not want terrorism and war. India should provide substantial evidence to Pakistan, so that Pakistan can help in probing this attack.

Federal Minister for Petroleum added that stationing 10 lakh Indian army at Kashmir and by not conducting plebiscite, India is challenging writ of United Nations (UN). By killing innocent Kashmiris, India has proved that it is an irresponsible state .Ghulam Sarwar Khan added that this the right time that UN should solve 70 years old Kashmir issue peacefully.

Prime Minister approves draft Pak-Turkey Strategic Economic Framework

Islamabad, February 20, 2019 (PPI-OT): The Prime Minister approved in principle, the draft Strategic Economic Framework between Pakistan and Turkey at a meeting held here. The Prime Minister directed for early finalization of the framework aiming at transforming the bilateral relations between the two countries into a broader growing strategic economic relationship. He directed relevant ministries to vigorously pursue this framework and put in place strong institutional arrangements for its implementation, once finalized.

The meeting was attended by relevant federal ministers and secretaries including Finance, Information and Broadcasting, IPC, Health, Commerce, Energy, Chairman BOI and others. Secretary EAD gave a detailed briefing on the contents and contours of the proposed framework. It was informed that during the Prime Minister’s visit to Turkey in the first week of January this year, the top leadership of the two sides had agreed to transform the bilateral relationship into a long-term strategic trade, investment and economic relationship based on the principles of reciprocity and fairness.

On his return from Turkey, the Prime Minister constituted a ten member ministerial committee headed by the Finance Minister, Asad Umar to finalize the proposed framework. Subsequently, two meetings of this Ministerial Committee were chaired by the Finance Minister and ideas and proposals were received from the 16 relevant ministries of the federal government. After due consideration and examination, proposals were identified, evaluated and incorporated into a wholesome draft strategic economic framework.

The Finance Minister briefed the meeting that it is an integrated framework that has been built keeping in view the best interest of Pakistan, capitalizing on mutual complementarities and key advantages of the two economies, the framework so finalized will serve as the overarching strategic policy framework integrating all facets of existing bilateral economic cooperation into a single platform.

The Economic Framework seeks to build a strategic economic framework with brotherly country Turkey in a globally evolving geo strategic environment and through this instrument tangible measurable results will be pursued. It will encompass broader areas of bilateral cooperation like trade, textiles, investment, industries and production, energy, economy/banking and finance, aviation, agriculture, social sectors and tourism. Pakistan through this framework is not looking for aid but trade, investment and technology for enhancing industrial productivity of its economy.

There are strong mutual complementarities between the two economies. While on one hand Pakistan can benefit from modern industrial base and technological advancement specifically in auto sector, steel sector, value added textiles and tourism on the other hand Pakistan can meet Turkish economy’s requirements such as agricultural products, raw materials, textile materials etc. The joint ventures between Turkey and Pakistan in multiple sectors including value added textile and leather industry can produce quality products for export to European Union and East Asian markets. After approval by the Prime Minister in principle, the government of Pakistan is now sharing this draft framework with the Turkish side for their review and consideration before the same is finalized between the two countries in the coming weeks.
