Ambassador of Netherlands calls on Parliamentary Leader of PPP-P Senator Sherry Rehman

Islamabad, November 14, 2019 (PPI-OT): Ambassador of Netherlands H.E Mr. Wouter Plomp made a courtesy call on Parliamentary Party Leader PPP-P, Senator Sherry Rehman at Parliament House, Islamabad, on Thursday and exchanged views over issues of mutual interest. The prevailing situation in Kashmir and the genocide of Kashmiris in the valley came under discussion.

The need for regular parliamentary interactions between the two countries was also stressed. He sought to enhance relations with the PPP as a hallmark of his country’s broad-based relationships with Pakistan’s political mainstream. Participants of 49th PNS Course visit Senate of Pakistan, meet Leader of the House in the Senate Senator Shibli Faraz

Islamabad, November 13, 2019 (PPI-OT): 90 course members and 17 faculty members of Pakistan Navy War College, Lahore visited Parliament House on Wednesday and were given a comprehensive briefing on the role and functions of the Upper House of the Parliament. The course members and faculty met with Leader of the House in Senate Senator Shibli Faraz and were briefed by Secretary Senate regarding the Constitutional scheme, rationale behind the idea of a bi-cameral legislature and consequently the creation of Senate of Pakistan, number of seats in the Senate, its role as the House of Federation, electoral process, the mechanism of House and Committee business and empowerment of Senate over the course of years.

Leader of the House Senator Shibli Faraz welcomed the participants to the Parliament House and termed it a very positive step that the organs of the State are engaging with each other and understanding the dynamics of the parliamentary system of government. Leader of the House observed that Senate of Pakistan is working towards spreading equality, peace and harmony among the federating units and has come a long way in terms of role and powers. He expressed hope that this experience is of value to the participants and faculty of the course.

The briefing was followed by an interactive session where participants raised questions about the initiatives on e-governance and e-parliament, the benefits and need of reserved seats for women in the Parliament, different parliamentary instruments, election process, and enhancement of Senate’s powers after 18th Amendment and Parliament’s role in National Action Plan.

Deputy Commandant Cadre Syed Wajeeh ul Hassan SI (M), who was heading the delegation of Pakistan Navy War College, said that this course is a very important part of development of the officers and visits to Parliament are a significant part of the course. He told that out of the 90 visiting participants of the course 25% were from friendly countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, UAE, Bangladesh, China, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Oman and South Africa. The participants termed their visit insightful about the Senate of Pakistan which has become an essential organ of the state machinery and is a stabilizing factor in the political landscape of the country.

Mandviwalla for boosting Trade, Economic Cooperation between Pakistan and Cuba

Islamabad, November 13, 2019 (PPI-OT): Deputy Chairman Senate Saleem Mandviwalla has said that the level of bilateral cooperation at political level between Pakistan and Cuba signifies to broaden the mutual collaboration in diverse fields to work jointly for the growth and prosperity of the people of two sides. During meeting with Gabriel Tiel Capote, Ambassador of Cuba in Pakistan on Wednesday at Parliament House, Deputy Chairman Senate observed that the current trade volume between the two countries needs to be enhanced as there is huge scope for improvement.

He said that abundant opportunities are there for investment and business delegations of the two sides need to increase interactions and explore possibilities of investment. He said that Pakistan highly values its bilateral relations with Cuba and desires to further expand cooperation. “We desire to further expand mutual collaboration in trade, education and other fields”, Mandviwalla said.

He also underscored the need for enhanced Parliamentary linkages to bring people of the two sides more close and pave the way for multi-sectorial cooperation. Senator Saleem Mandviwalla also extended invitation to the speaker of the Cuban parliament to visit Pakistan. He said that Pakistan and Cuba had supported each other in times of need and excellent cooperation existed between the two at International forums. He hoped that both sides would strive for creating a level playing field for investment and explore avenues to give boost to trade and commerce.

The Cuban envoy thanked the Deputy Chairman Senate for warm welcome at the Parliament. He agreed with the views of Deputy Chairman Senate for increasing trade and commercial ties for bilateral benefit.

Sanjrani for Making the Committee System more Robust and Efficient

Islamabad, November 12, 2019 (PPI-OT): “Senate, being House of Federation has a crucial role in policy scrutiny and oversight of the executive besides legislation to promote and ensure good governance” said Senate Chief Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani while presiding over a meeting of the Council of Chairpersons, a high powered Committee consisting of Chairpersons of all Committees of the Senate here at Parliament House on Tuesday.

In his opening remarks Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani underscored the need to make the Committee system more robust and efficient to effectively perform its functions more efficiently. He said that Senate is the House of Federation and has raised effective voice for federating units playing active role in national integration.

Deputy Chairman Senate Saleem Mandviwalla, Leader of the House in the Senate Shibli Faraz and Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Raja Muhammad Zafar ul Haq also emphasized the need to further strengthen Committees of Senate. The meeting was also attended by Chairpersons of Senate Standing Committees, Functional Committees and Special Committees, Secretary Senate Muhammad Anwar and senior officers of Senate Secretariat.

Chairman Senate observed that Committees discuss and debate important issues. The Council, however, decided to examine existing rules pertaining to Committees and suggest amendments, if needed, to make Committees more powerful. A sub-Committee was constituted in this regard which comprises of Senators Farooq H. Naek, Javed Abbasi, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif and Waleed Iqbal. Secretary Senate Muhammad Anwar also briefed the Committee about the implementation status of recommendations of previous meeting.

Chairman Senate announces monthly donation in Senate Employees Welfare Fund

Islamabad, November 08, 2019 (PPI-OT): Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani while presiding over meeting of the Executive Committee of Senate Secretariat Employees Welfare Fund announced to contribute Rs. 20,000/= per month as a contribution towards the Welfare Fund. The Chairman Senate made this decision keeping in view the importance of the welfare of the Senate employees. The amount would be deducted from his salary each month.

Chairing the high powered committee at the Parliament House on Thursday, Chairman Senate observed that employees are the asset of institution and their welfare is our top priority. He also called upon the members of the Upper House to come forward and contribute in the Welfare Fund generously for the wellbeing of the employees.

Chairman Senate said that Parliament has a different working environment and employees need encouragement to fulfill their tasks. He further remarked that our aim is to improve and work for the betterment of the employees. During the meeting, a number of cases of financial assistance were approved.

Secretary Senate Muhammad Anwar and senior officers of the Senate briefed the Committee about the overall status of fund, monthly donation by employees and members and the amount approved as financial assistance in cases of death, wedding and other health care related issues. The meeting was attended by Senators Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, Sana Jamali, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Azam Swati, Secretary Senate Muhammad Anwar and senior officers of the Senate Secretariat.

Chairman EU Military Committee calls on Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Defence

Islamabad, November 07, 2019 (PPI-OT): Chairman EU Military Committee, General Claudio Graziano along with an entourage called on Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Defence, Senator Walid Iqbal at Parliament House, Islamabad on Thursday. Issues that came under discussion included regional Defence and Peace with special reference to fencing of the Western border and the situation of Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) in the East.

Chairman Committee Senator Walid Iqbal was of the view that Pakistan looks towards the European Union to use its stature and influence in the international community towards ensuring regional peace and security. He stressed the need for promoting peace in Afghanistan and taking up the atrocities being committed in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK).

He added that a dangerous situation has emerged as India has repeatedly been issuing irresponsible statements on its policy of no first use of nuclear weapons. He stated Pakistan through its policy of Nuclear deterrence has prevented India from becoming a regional hegemon. This attitude he added, was detrimental to regional and world peace. He asserted that this region posits the greatest threat of Nuclear Conflict after the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Chairman of the European Union Military Committee, General Claudio Graziano; was of the view that Pakistan is a strategic ally and as the Chairman of the European Union Military Committee envisions emerging new trends in defence and peace keeping as shared value. He said that unlike NATO the European Union has the capacity to finance development of forces.

Sharing his views on the Kashmir issue, General Graziano was of the view that the European Union expects a bilateral solution. He stressed the need for increased participation of Pakistan at the European Union to highlight this issue on a larger scale. For this, he said, pursuing a comprehensive approach and increased Confidence Building Measures between Pakistan and the European Union were crucial.

Speaking on his upcoming visit to Brussels, as part of a proposed parliamentary delegation, Senator Walid Iqbal stressed the need for increased participation of women Parliamentarians and leaders in exchange programs to promote world peace. General Claudio Graziano is on a three-day visit to Pakistan as guest of Joint Services Headquarters.
