Three New Units added to WAPDA Hospital Lahore; WAPDA Chairman inaugurates Gynae OBS, Neonatology, CCU

Lahore, September 30, 2020 (PPI-OT): In pursuit of commitment to providing improved health care facilities to the employees and their families, three new units have been added to WAPDA Hospital Complex Lahore. These include Gynae Obstetrics, Neonatology and Critical Care Unit (CCU). Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (Retd) inaugurated the newly established units today.

WAPDA Managing Director (Administration), General Manager (HRD), PSO, DG (Medical Services), Medical Superintendent and other senior officers were also present on the occasion. While inaugurating the new units, the Chairman said that WAPDA has been taking a number of steps for improvement of its health care system for the employees so that they can be provided with modern health facilities. He expressed the hope that the new units will serve well in this regard. The Chairman directed the concerned authorities to submit the proposals for upgradation of Cardiac Centre, ENT and Radiology departments so that better healthcare facilities could be provided to the patients.

It is pertinent to mention that newly established 15-bed Neonatology Department has two units i.e. Well Baby Clinic and High Dependency Unit. The CCU is an 8-bed hybrid type critical care unit including 5 ventilatory and 2 isolated infectious diseases beds where basic and intermediate monitoring is available. This is equipped with centralized laboratory system, radiological services and waste management system. A fully equipped and staffed 8-bed labour room has also been established with state-of-the-art operation theatre to conduct elective and emergencies deliveries.

It is worth mentioning that WAPDA provides health facilities through its health care system not only to WAPDA employees and their families but also to the employees of Power Distribution Companies, Generation Companies and National Transmission and Dispatch Company. For the purpose, an amount of Rs.5.7 Billion is spent annually on providing health facilities.

WAPDA operates as many as 12 Hospitals all over the country including one 250- bed hospital at Lahore, nine 50-bed hospitals at Peshawar, Tarbela, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Hyderabad, Gudduand Quetta, two 20-bed hospitals at Mangla and Sukkur, 12fortified dispensaries, 17 basic dispensaries and 2 M.I. Rooms.

WAPDA embarks upon constructing Atta Abad Hydropower Project

Lahore, September 24, 2020 (PPI-OT): In yet another significant development towards socio-economic uplift of Gilgit Baltistan (GB), the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has embarked upon constructing Atta Abad Lake Hydropower Project. WAPDA Chairman Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (Retd) stated this during his visit to the proposed site of the project located on River Hunza, 20 Kilometer (Km) upstream of Karim Abad and 130 Km from Gilgit. GB Chief Secretary, WAPDA General Manager (Hydro Planning), General Manager (Projects) Northern Areas and other officers concerned were also present during the visit.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman said that Atta Abad Lake Hydropower Project, with installed generation capacity of 50 MW, will prove to be instrumental in meeting the electricity demand of Hunza and Nagar valleys, triggering economic activities and improving tourism facilities in the area. He said that WAPDA has released funds amounting to Rs.22 million to its Hydro Planning formation for carrying out feasibility study of the project through in-house expertise. The feasibility study is likely to be completed by the first quarter of 2021. After completion of feasibility study, detailed engineering design, award of contract and commencement of construction work, Atta Abad Lake Hydropower Project will be completed in four years, he added.

Earlier, the Chairman was briefed that initial survey work has been substantially finalized, while the teams for neo-tectonic survey and geological mapping have been mobilized to the site. In addition, detailed sub-surface geotechnical investigations and hydrographic survey have also been initiated. The Chairman expressed satisfaction over the progress achieved so far on the project.

WAPDA Chairman also visits Diamer Basha Dam to review construction work

In the second phase of his visit to GB, WAPDA Chairman visited Diamer Basha Dam Project to review construction work on various sites. Diamer Basha Dam General Manager briefed the Chairman on progress of the project.

The Chairman said that it is good to see that construction activities on the project are gaining momentum with each passing day, generating employment opportunities to the people, of Diamer in particular. WAPDA is committed to bring a positive change in lives of the locals with construction of Diamer Basha Dam, hence, progress and prosperity of the people residing in the project area will always be given priority, he concluded.

Diamer Basha Dam Project: Process of Thousands of Jobs for Gilgit-Baltistan Commences

Lahore, September 20, 2020 (PPI-OT): As the construction activities on strategically important Diamer Bash Dam Project are picking up pace, the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has also commenced the process for providing thousands of jobs to the people of Dimer and Gilgit Baltistan for poverty alleviation in the area and socio-economic uplift of the local populace.

WAPDA today advertised as many as 124 vacancies ranging from Basic Pay Scale (BPS) 6 to 16, against which only the people belonging to District Diamer, Gilgit Baltistan will be recruited. Earlier, WAPDA also advertised 179 vacancies of BPS 14 to 20 and some 317 vacancies for security personnel. The eligible candidates hailing from the project area and Gilgit Baltistan will be given priority against these vacancies as well, since progress of the locals is amongst the foremost priorities of WAPDA.

Besides providing employment to the locals on priority, a sum of Rs.78.5 billion is also being spent for resettlement and Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) leading towards socio-economic development in the area. As many as 44 development schemes for improving the existing water supply, irrigation, health and education infrastructures. Construction of Chilas Cadet College under the CBMs is nearing completion which will help provide quality education to the local students. In addition, Thak Hydropower Project of 3 MW is also about to be completed to meet the electricity requirements of the area.

It is worth mentioning here that Diamer Basha Dam, a vital project for water, food and energy security of Pakistan, is being constructed on River Indus, 315 Kilometers (Km) upstream of Tarbela Dam, 180 Km downstream of Gilgit, and 40 Km downstream of Chilas town.

Diamer Basha Dam with gross water storage capacity of 8.1 million acre feet (MAF) and power generation capacity of 4500 Mega Watt (MW) will go a long way in stabilizing the economy. The project will also prove to be instrumental in developing the human resources and creating employment opportunities in the country. As many as 16,500 job opportunities of engineers and other staff will be made available at the national and local levels.

Tarbela 4th Hydel Power Station achieves 10-billion units mark; Yields Rs.75 billion revenue

Lahore, September 10, 2020 (PPI-OT): In yet another significant development towards contribution of low-cost hydel electricity to the National Grid, Tarbela 4th Extension Hydel Power Station crossed 10-billion units generation mark last night, as it has contributed 10.021 billion units to the system. This contribution of Tarbela 4th Extension Hydel Power Station yielded a revenue of about Rs.75 billion to WAPDA. Simultaneously, it also accrued saving worth Rs.100 billion to the national exchequer, which would otherwise have been borne to generate same quantum of electricity through thermal resources.

Tarbela 4th Extension Hydel Power Station has been instrumental in meeting electricity needs of Pakistan, triggering socio-economic development in the country. The project has been constructed on Tunnel No. 4 of Tarbela Dam. It has three generating units, each of them having capacity of 470 MW. With completion of Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project, the installed capacity of Tarbela Hydel Power Station has increased from 3478 MW to 4888 MW.

It is worth mentioning that the World Bank has termed Tarbela 4th Extension as the flagship project of WAPDA. This project went into operation with commissioning of its first unit in February 2018, followed by completion of its second and third units in a phased manner by mid-2018. Annual benefits of the project have been estimated Rs. 30 billion.

WAPDA Chairman visits Nai Gaj Dam Project to assess post-flood situation; assures Dadu, Sindh civil administration of full support to tackle flood situation

Lahore, August 14, 2020 (PPI-OT): In the wake of recent floods, the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (Retd) today visited Nai Gaj Dam project area located in Dadu District of Sindh Province with a view to assess the situation on ground and damages to the project caused by the flood.

During the visit, the Chairman had a detailed round of various components of the project. WAPDA General Manager (Projects) South and Project Director Nai Gaj Dam were also present on the occasion. WAPDA Chairman, on the occasion, assured his full support to the civil administration of Dadu and Sindh to tackle the situation that has arisen out of the recent floods. He also appreciated WAPDA engineers and officials for their efforts to protect the structures of Right Bank Outfall Drain (RBOD) Project during the flood.

Earlier, the Chairman was briefed by the General Manager (Projects) South about the water flows in the project area during the floods, along with status and the loss done to the project components. The Chairman was apprised that the upstream protection dyke (Coffer Dam) to secure construction area of the Main Dam affected due to the floods, however, part of the Main Dam built so far remained safe. The Chairman directed the project management to conduct a detailed study and submit a report about damages to the project. He also asked them to recommend measures to cope with such a situation in future.

It is pertinent to mention that Nai Gaj Dam Project is being constructed on Gaj River, 65-Kilometer North-West of Dadu. On completion, the dam will have a gross storage capacity of 300,000 acre feet, while command area of the project comprises of 28,800 acres. The progress on the approved components stands at 51 percent. If the funding is approved by the ECNEC, Nai Gaj Dam can be completed in two years.

National Flag Hoisting Ceremony held at WAPDA House

Lahore, August 14, 2020 (PPI-OT): A flag hoisting ceremony was held today at WAPDA House to celebrate the Independence Day with national zeal. WAPDA Member (Finance) Naveed Asghar Chaudhry, the chief guest on the occasion, hoisted the National Flag followed by the National Anthem that was sung by the students of WAPDA schools in consonance with the main flag hoisting ceremony at Islamabad. The students of WAPDA schools presented national songs in the ceremony.

WAPDA Member (Water) Amir Bashir Chaudhry, senior officers and employees attended the ceremony adhering to the SOPs relating to Covid-19 pandemic. It is pertinent to mention that a huge National Flag, especially prepared for the Independence Day measuring 100 feet x 40 feet and weighing 180 kilograms, has also been hung on WAPDA House in addition to illuminating the building.

Neelum Jhelum Plant achieves 10-billion units mark, yields Rs.120 billion

Lahore, August 10, 2020 (PPI-OT): The engineering marvel 969 MW-Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Plant achieved yet another landmark, as its contribution to the National Grid crossed 10-billion units generation mark last night, thereby yielding revenue of over Rs.120 billion.

Neelum Jhelum Power Plant, with efficient operation, has not only been meeting the design generation but also exceeding the annual rated generation. It is pertinent to mention that Neelum Jhelum Power Plant during fiscal year 2019-20 generated 4843 million units of hydel electricity against the target of 4660 million units despite Covid-19 hiccups.

The project, having four generating units of 242.25 MW capacity each, started electricity generation with commissioning of its first unit in April 2018 attaining its maximum installed generation of 969 MW on August 14, 2018 with commissioning of its all four units.

It is worth mentioning here that Neelum Jhelum generated upto 1040 MW on April 9, 2019 beyond installed capacity of 969 MW, which reflects the efficiency of its electro-mechanical equipment, the turbines in particular. Now-a-days, the project has been running on full load i.e. 969 MW because the required quantum of water is available due to high-flow season.
