Top officials from the Pakistani government and UN Women have underscored the urgent need for sustained collaboration to overcome persistent challenges in financial empowerment, legal protection, and social participation for women, following a high-level meeting in the capital.
According to an official report today, the discussion took place during a courtesy call on Federal Minister for Human Rights, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, by Ms. Christine Arab, UN Women Regional Director, who was accompanied by the organization”s country representative, Mr. Jamshed Qazi.
Senator Tarar reaffirmed the government”s commitment to ensuring women”s full inclusion in national life while safeguarding them from violence, discrimination, and economic marginalization. He outlined the country”s comprehensive approach, which integrates constitutional guarantees, legislative reforms, and dedicated policy frameworks.
The minister highlighted the crucial role played by national bodies such as the Ministry of Human Rights, the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), and the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) in protecting women’s rights. He also noted the support provided by social welfare centers and the 1099 helpline in offering legal, social, and financial assistance.
Ms. Arab acknowledged Pakistan”s significant legislative achievements, citing laws against child marriage and the use of technology-enabled measures to combat gender-based violence (GBV). She also praised the creation of the National Gender Data Portal and the country’s active participation in international frameworks like CEDAW and the Beijing Platform for Action.
The dialogue also covered key policy initiatives developed with UN Women’s support, including the National Gender Policy Framework and a national policy aimed at ending all forms of violence against women. The minister also briefed the delegation on the National Strategy for Male Engagement, a program designed to involve men and boys as allies in preventing GBV.
Both parties agreed on the importance of continued partnership to accelerate progress. Ms. Arab assured ongoing support from the international community, applauding Pakistan”s dedication to fostering an equitable and inclusive society, while Minister Tarar reiterated the nation”s commitment to working closely with international partners.
