University Rankings and Student Futures Hinge on Imminent Skills Test Deadline

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) today issued an urgent advisory for final-year computing students, reminding them of the fast-approaching March 20, 2026, deadline to register for the inaugural National Skill Competency Test (NSCT), an initiative linking their academic performance directly to future employment prospects and national university rankings.

The complimentary, computer-based examination, scheduled for early April across the country, offers participants a gateway into a national IT talent pool, enhancing their visibility to both domestic and international employers. High-achievers will be awarded a joint certificate from the HEC, Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), and the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA).

Furthermore, students who qualify will earn an academic credit from their university and receive priority consideration for internships, apprenticeships, and pathways to international certifications, providing a significant career advantage.

Announced in January, the NSCT is described as a landmark initiative designed to bridge the gap between academic qualifications and the evolving needs of the global technology industry. The test was developed following directives from the Prime Minister and in close collaboration with the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) and P@SHA.

The HEC has also underscored the test”s importance for higher education institutions, urging them to secure maximum student participation. The results will be directly linked to a new national benchmarking system for computing programmes, where universities will be categorised into performance tiers based on their students” success.

To facilitate a smooth registration process, the Commission has already conducted an orientation for nominated university focal persons, who are the designated points of contact for student enrolment.

The NSCT is open to students currently enrolled in their 7th and 8th semesters of computing programmes, including but not limited to Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science.
