New Delhi, September 27, 2021 (PPI-OT):An unprecedented India-wide strike is being observed, today, to mark the 1st anniversary of 3 controversial farm laws enacted by the Modi regime to choke farmers. Call for the strike has been given by Indian farmers’ union, Samyukt Kisan Morcha, against the contentious farmer laws introduced by Modi govt in September last year that have sparked one of India’s biggest protests in the country.
Particularly in Punjab and Haryana states of India, all national highways, state highways, link road and railway tracks have been severally blocked, bringing road and rail traffic to a halt. In Punjab, farmers have started protesting at over 350 places.
Punjab’s Additional Director General of Police (AGDP) has issued instructions to the police forces of the state to ensure law and order at protest places. In Haryana too, highways are blocked 25 places alone in the Jind district. The strike has garnered support from various political parties. India’s main opposition parties are fully supporting the Bharat Bandh call given by the protesting farmers.
While Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has extended support to the bandh, Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav has announced he will participate in the nationwide strike. The Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu governments, too, have declared complete support to the Bandh. Congress has also said it will be joining the protests on Monday.
Hundreds of thousands of Indian farmers have been protesting since Nov 2020 against these farm laws. Samyukt Kisan Morcha, the umbrella body of over 40 farm unions, is leading the Indian farmers’ agitation against the controversial agricultural laws.
All India Bank Officers’ Confederation has also backed the Bharat Bandh call by Indian farmers’ union. Most of the offices, shops, industries and commercial establishments are closed across India. However, all emergency establishments and essential services, including hospitals, medical stores, relief and rescue work and people attending to personal emergencies, are exempted.
Indian farmers are determined to continue their protest until the farm laws are withdrawn unconditionally. The famers blame that RSS-backed Narendra Modi wants the poor farmers of India to die of hunger so that he can fill the stomachs of his rich friends. They pointed out that Modi’s refusal to withdraw the agricultural laws is indicative of his insensitivity towards the farmers’ plight.
