US lawmakers seek answers from India about IOK situation

Washington, October 26, 2019 (PPI-OT): The US Congress has demanded answers from Indian Ambassador to the US, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, regarding the current grim situation in occupied Kashmir. Six members of the US Congress, David Nicola Cicilline, Dina Titus, Chrissy Houlahan, Andy Levin, Susan Wild and James Patrick McGovern have written a letter to the ambassador asking follow-up questions to a congressional briefing on Kashmir.

The Congress members noted that the update by Shringla Update given to the House Foreign Affairs Committee on 16th of October about the situation in occupied Kashmir was different to what their constituents had painted a picture of the territory. They asked India to open Jammu and Kashmir to both domestic and foreign journalists and other international visitors in the interest of open and increased communication.

Meanwhile, the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Agnes Callamard, addressing a news conference in New York said that the situation in Kashmir was a big concern for many people working within the Special Procedures of the World Body. She criticized India’s inadequate responses to her communications about wide-ranging abuses, including killings, in the occupied territory and vowed to keep the pressure on New Delhi.
