Violence erupts in India’s Tamil Nadu state over girl student’s suicide

Chennai, July 18, 2022 (PPI-OT): Violence erupted after police opened fire on students and youth during a protest against the suicide of a girl student in Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

The violence broke out in Kallakuruchi area of the Salem district in Tamil Nadu after the Class XII student jumped off her hostel building of a private school. In a suicide note recovered from her room, she had mentioned the name of two teachers who had mentally tortured her to be the reason behind her suicide.

The policemen fired on protesters after a group of students and youths barged into the private school after breaking open the gates.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has directed the Director General of Police and the state Home Secretary to reach Kallakurichi and to give a report on the violent protests after visiting the area.

There was tension in Chinna Salem near Kallakurichi after local people, protesting the suicide of a Class XII girl student of a private residential school, clashed with the police.

Student organisations, mostly Dalit student organisations and the Left also held protests. The Class 12 victim’s family has refused to take custody of the body and has asked the school management to take action.
