Widespread Winter Weather System Prompts Landslide and Travel Warnings Across Country

The National Weather Forecasting Centre today issued a significant alert, advising tourists to exercise extreme caution and avoid non-essential travel in northern regions due to a powerful weather system expected to cause road closures, landslides, and avalanches from December 20th to 22nd, 2025.

The Met Office predicted that a western disturbance will enter the country through Balochistan on December 19th, subsequently gripping the upper parts of the nation by December 20th.

Under the influence of this system, Balochistan is forecast to receive rain, wind, and thunderstorms with snowfall over hills from the evening of December 19th to December 20th. Affected districts include Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Gwadar, Kalat, and Khuzdar.

From the night of December 20th to December 22nd, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is expected to experience rain and thunderstorms, with moderate snowfall in upper areas like Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Kohistan. The forecast covers a vast area from Peshawar to Waziristan, with occasional gaps in precipitation.

Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are projected to receive moderate to heavy snowfall, along with rain and thunderstorms, from the night of December 20th until the morning of December 23rd. Key areas include the Neelum valley, Muzaffarabad, Skardu, Hunza, and Gilgit.

For Punjab and the capital, rain and thunderstorms are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and the Potohar region on December 20th and 21st. The tourist destinations of Murree and Galliyat are likely to receive snowfall during this period. Cloudy weather with drizzle is also anticipated in major cities like Lahore, Faisalabad, and Multan.

In Sindh, partly to fully cloudy weather is expected across most of the province on December 19th and 20th.

Authorities have specifically warned that snowfall could lead to road blockages and slippery conditions in numerous northern locations, including Naran, Kaghan, Murree, and Skardu. Despite the precipitation, smog and fog are likely to continue in central and southern Punjab and upper Sindh.
