Workshop Held in Khairpur to Address Child Marriage, Maternal Mortality

A two-day training program concluded Sunday in Khairpur, organized by Bhattai Social Watch and Advocacy (BSWA), Save the Children, USAID, and Strengthening Participatory Organization (SPO). Trainers highlighted the detrimental effects of child marriage, including the risks of maternal mortality, fistula, and psychological trauma. They equipped participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to address forced marriages. Participants gained insights into national and provincial laws, policies, and international frameworks. The curriculum covered case identification, documentation, referral procedures, safety strategies, and rehabilitation services for victims.

Trainers emphasized the harmful consequences of child marriage, including maternal mortality, fistula, and psychological trauma. They cited the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act 2013 and the recently passed National Assembly Child Marriage Restraint Act 2025, both of which set the legal age for marriage at 18.

The workshop featured discussions on case management protocols, reporting mechanisms, legal recourse, and referral networks. Conversations encompassed medical care, access to healthcare, responsible media coverage, public education, and victim advocacy. The roles of various government departments, including the Women Development Department, Social Welfare Department, Darul Aman, shelters, and Women Crisis Centers, were also highlighted.

Ahmed Bux Ghumro, Consultant at the Provincial Ombudsman’s Office Khairpur, was the chief guest at the closing ceremony. He commended BSWA’s efforts to raise social awareness, emphasizing the need for practical measures and effective implementation of regulations to prevent such marriages.

Zulfiqar Ali Gilal, Additional Director of the Social Welfare Department Khairpur, lauded the program, highlighting its significance in inter-departmental coordination, referral pathways, and reporting systems. He reiterated his commitment to working alongside civil society organizations and NGOs to protect vulnerable populations.

Khadim Hussain Mirani, Executive Director of BSWA, welcomed the participants and expressed gratitude to the project funders. Training for the program was conducted by Professor (Retired) Dr. Taj Muhammad Lashari, Dr. Ali Raza Lashari, Manzar Abbas Zaidi, and Rabia Nasir, under the supervision of Samiullah Mahar of SPO. Certificates were distributed to the participants, who included representatives from government departments, media organizations, and NGOs.
