Like around the world, World Blood Donor Day was also observed in Pakistan today. On the occasion of this global day, an urgent humanitarian crisis has been highlighted in Pakistan, where a significant shortage of blood donations poses a serious challenge for healthcare providers.
This year’s theme, “A Drop of Humanity. Donate Blood. Save Lives,” highlights the crucial role played by selfless blood donors. The campaign aims to highlight the need for safe blood and blood products, while thanking voluntary, unpaid donors whose contributions are vital in saving lives.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for immediate action, urging residents of Pakistan to voluntarily donate blood. The United Nations agency has marked a worrying deficit, indicating that Pakistan faces an annual shortage of 2.3 million blood donations.
According to current statistics, Pakistan needs more than 5 million blood donations annually to meet its medical needs. However, only approximately 2.7 million donations are collected annually, of which only 18 percent are obtained from voluntary, unpaid donors.
Dr. Lu Dapeng, WHO representative in Pakistan, has emphasized the importance of increasing public participation to fill this critical gap and meet the country’s growing medical needs. This appeal is a clear call for collective action, highlighting the human spirit present in every blood donation.
