President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday framed the devastating floods and landslides in Sri Lanka as a stark example of climate injustice, asserting that nations in the Global South are bearing the brunt of a crisis they did little to create, while offering Pakistan’s unwavering support to the island nation.
In a formal message of condolence, the President expressed profound sorrow over the significant loss of life and widespread property destruction following days of torrential rainfall. He extended his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families and all individuals impacted by the natural disaster.
President Zardari voiced serious concern over reports indicating dozens of fatalities and numerous people still unaccounted for amid the ongoing catastrophe. He affirmed that Pakistan stands in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka during this challenging period.
Rescue and relief operations are currently underway across several districts, hampered by continuing adverse weather conditions.
Highlighting the broader environmental crisis, the President observed that countries like Pakistan and Sri Lanka are disproportionately affected by climate change despite their minimal contributions to its causes. ‘Extreme weather events are increasingly threatening lives, livelihoods, and public resources,’ he stated.
President Zardari underscored the urgent necessity for collective global action to assist affected nations. He called for the development of international strategies centered on resilience, preparedness, and mitigation to combat the growing threat.
He also personally conveyed his condolences to his Sri Lankan counterpart, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, pledging Pakistan’s assistance to the government and citizens of Sri Lanka as they manage the humanitarian fallout.
The President concluded by praying for the departed souls, for strength for the grieving families, and for the safe recovery of all those who remain missing.
