Another jail official gets bail in LeJ prisoners’ escape case

Karachi: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday granted bail to another central jail Karachi official in a case pertaining to the escape of two prisoners belonging to a banned outfit from the jail.

The SHC bench pronounced its verdict on the bail application filed by the Central Jail’s tower in-charge Rafiq Channa who had moved the court against his detention in the case.

The defence counsel argued that Channa had nothing to do with the escape of two terrorists. On the other hand, the prosecution department argued that the accused was a tower in-charge who was well known about the prisoners, adding that there were three witnesses against him.

After completion of arguments from both sides, the SHC bench granted bail to jail official against a surety of Rs100, 000.

Earlier, the court had also approved bail applications of then jail superintendent Faheem Anwar Memon and assistant superintendent Abdul Rehman Shaikh and ordered their release if not arrested in other case.

The two prisoners said to be affiliated with banned militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Shaikh Mohammad Mumtaz alias Firaun alias Sher Khan and Mohammad Ahmed Khan alias Munna had escaped from the central jail Karachi on June 13 last year.

Following the report of the incident, the inspector general prisons Nusrat Mangan suspended central jail superintendent, other officials and staffers and had ordered constitution of the case against them.

Subsequently, central jail superintendent Ghulam Murtaza, deputy superintendent Faheem Anwar Memon and assistant superintendent Abdul Rehman Shaikh were arrested.
