Another polio case reported from Karachi

Karachi:Emergency Operation Centre for Polio in Sindh has announced that a polio case has been reported from Karachi.

An 8 month old girl has become the e 3rd polio victim in Karachi and 6th in Sindh in 2019. Other affected districts are Hyderabad with 2 Cases of polio and Larkana with 1 case which was reported earlier in the year. Polio eradication has faced difficulties in 2019 with the total case count now standing at 62 with 46 cases from KP and KPTD, 6 cases from Sindh, 5 cases from Balochistan and 5 cases from Punjab. However the national and provincial governments are working hard to turn the situation around in the upcoming low season for polio.

“The child had routine dose of polio and it is being investigated how campaign doses were received. The child was low on immunity; this is why repeated vaccination of OPV is necessary. Further investigation into the case is under way” said the spokesperson for the EOC in Sindh. He added: “Parents must understand that with the polio virus present in the environment, they must vaccinate every child under 5 years of age during every campaign to protect them against polio.”
