Candidates’ silence on Aafia issue questioned

Karachi:Aafia Movement Pakistan has questioned the silence of majority of candidates on the issue of Dr Aafia Siddiqui and said a strong voice should be raised over grave violation of human rights of Aafia in US jail.

In a statement here Tuesday, Aafia Movement spokesman said that one month had already passed of going public of the report of the Pakistani Consul General Aisha Farooqui about the torture and harassment of Aafia in the US prison. This report was also submitted in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Aafia Movement has already written a letter to the leaders of political parties, as well as, the candidates of national and provincial assemblies. In this letter it was said that you are presenting yourself as the representative of the nation in the general elections 2018. When you have to discharge the duty of security and safety of the Pakistanis and doling out them justice and relief after winning the polls, then why are you silent on the atrocities being meted out to Dr Aafia Siddiqui in the US jail. Is it possible for any proud citizen to remain silent on this torture and inhuman treatment?

The spokesman said that Dr Aafia Siddiqui was born in Karachi and even today her house is situated in the Block 7 of Gulshan e Iqbal. He said the reaction of the candidates over the report about human rights violation of Aafia is a touchstone of their patriotism.

He welcomed PTI Chairman Imran Khan, MMA Vice President Sirajul Haq, TPL chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi and Pasban e Pakistan President Altaf Shakoor for their announcement to bring Aafia back home if they won the election.

He said the inhuman treatment of the daughter of the nation in the US prison is against our national honor and pride. It is the responsibility of rulers to provide safety and security to the Pakistani and save them from this inhuman humiliation. He said the government and opposition members in assemblies after the polls of 2008 and 2013 failed this responsibility; therefore, many chances of getting repatriation of Aafia Siddiqui were missed.
