Court: (SC directs Railways Minister to submit a business plan to uplift PR from its current condition)

ISLAMABAD:The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed to submit before the court within two weeks a comprehensive business plan to uplift Pakistan Railways from its current condition.

A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah directed this while hearing a case pertaining to losses incurred by Pakistan Railways.

The court expressed displeasure over the Railways Minister for running the PR in an inadequate manner. The Chief Justice asked the Railways Minister to apprise the court about an October 2019 fire incident in which 73 passengers were killed when apparently a gas cylinder brought by one of the travelers had exploded within the train.

To a court query, the Minister said that 75 people were dismissed after this tragic incident. The court, however, expressed dissatisfaction on the performance of Railways Minister and directed him to complete six-kilometer portion of the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) within two weeks.

The court also directed the Sindh government to provide all assistance on the KCR project. The court also summoned the Planning Minister and the Planning Secretary on the next hearing and adjourning the hearing until February 12.
