Five centers to be established in Sindh to combat XDR typhoid disease

KARACHI:Five diagnostic centers will be established in Sindh to combat XDR typhoid disease in Sindh province – two in Karachi and three in other parts of the province.

A committee comprising representatives from livestock, health, public health engineering, local government, water board and Wasa will be constituted in this regard.

The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting on National Action Plan on XDR Typhoid in Sindh presided over by Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho at her office today. She told the meeting that water born diseases could be eliminated through preventive measures and in this regard, a mass media campaign and social mobilization could effectively reduce certain diseases.

She asked the director concerned to also engage polio workers to distribute awareness material on XDR typhoid and a Health Care Commission should also follow SOP.

The meeting was informed that so far, as many 7909 patients of XDR typhoid had been registered in Sindh and highest number of such patients had been reported in Sanghar and Hyderabad districts.

It was also decided that Sindh Health Care Commission should ensure implementation of laboratory SOPs, all stakeholders would coordinate, damaged pipe lines would be repaired and community engagement would also be ensured.

Federal DG Health Dr Arshad, Special Secretary Health Sindh Nasimul Ghani Sehto, DG Health Dr Mubeen Ahmed, WHO Consultant Dr Jamal and Dr Sara Salman also attended the meeting.
