SC’s Monitoring Judge visits forensic DNA lab

KARACHI:The Supreme Court’s Monitoring Judge, Anti-terrorism Courts across the country, Justice Faisal Arab on Saturday visit the Sindh Forensic DNA and Serology Laboratory (SFDL) recently set up at the Jamil-ur-Rahman Center for Genome Research of Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research, University of Karachi.

Justice Faisal Arab inspected the facilities of forensic DNA analysis at the state-of-the-art laboratory. He was accompanied by Justice Muhamad Iqbal Kalhoro, Justice Omar Sial, Learned Judge Bashir Ahmed Khoso, Chief Secretary Mumtaz Ali Shah, Prosecutor General Sindh Dr. Faiz Shah, Additional IG Karachi Ghulam Nabi Memon, MIT High Court Mr. A. Razzaq, Secretary Home Department Sindh Abdul Kabir Qazi, Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director, International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan, SFDL Project Director and many others.

The SC Monitoring Judge appreciated Prof. Iqbal Choudhary and his team for setting up the most modern research facility for forensic DNA analysis in the limited time, and expressed satisfaction over the qualified and trained staff, highly advanced technology, purpose-built laboratory building and latest equipment.

Earlier in the morning, Justice Faisal Arab had a meeting with Prof. Iqbal Choudhary and other officials of the ICCBS at the board room of Dr. Panjwani Center. Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, Chairman, Prime Minister’s National Task Force on Science and Technology also joined the meeting for a while.

Prof. Iqbal Choudhary said that this modern facility of forensic DNA analysis was developed according to international standards under the guidance of Sindh Minister for Health Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho. The laboratory was established within the very limited time period to help police and prosecution to provide speedy and transparent justice to common people, he said.

Justice Faisal Arab was amazed at the concrete progress made by ICCBS. He praised the efforts and achievements of the International Center.

Meanwhile in the meeting, Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmad gave a detailed presentation about the progress of the forensic laboratory. He said that the mission of this lab was to provide and serve the citizens of Sindh province with ethical, accurate, and unbiased forensic DNA and Serology analysis services in order to assist law enforcement and judiciary.
