Ali: (Looters of national wealth won’t escape unpunished: Ali)

ISLAMABAD:Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan has said Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government would not spare the looters of national wealth and let them escape unpunished.

Talking to a private news channel, he said the process of accountability has already started in the country and the corrupt would have to bear the brunt of their unlawful deeds.

The Minister of State said the government would welcome the Opposition’s positive criticism on its policies and their suggestions regarding public friendly projects.

11th International CSR Summit on 24th January

KARACHI:National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH) will organize THE 11th International CSR Summit 2019 on 24 January 2019 at a local hotel in Islamabad.

NFEH President Mohammad Naeem Qureshi briefed media about the summit that leading corporate leaders, CSR experts, government officials and ambassadors would deliver their speeches and presentations on this occasion.

The objective of the event is to provide an innovative platform of interaction and networking while creating awareness about CSR amongst the conference delegates. The experts will also discuss the emerging concepts and issues related to CSR in Pakistan and provide remedies based on practical approaches and implementation techniques.

UN (Foreign Minister’s meeting with President UN General Assembly)

ISLAMABAD:Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi Friday held talks with President of UN General Assembly, Ms. Maria Fernanda Espinosa at the Foreign Office. This was the first official engagement of the visiting dignitary since her arrival in the country.

The two dignitaries discussed a range of issues including recent trends and developments at the global and regional levels. Both agreed that the United Nations remained an indispensable institution for advancing dialogue, cooperation and pursuing collective solutions to global challenges.

Both sides also exchanged views and noted the convergence in the priorities being pursued by the General Assembly President and Pakistan Government’s people-centric agenda.

The Foreign Minister briefed Ms. Espinosa and conveyed Pakistan’s deep concern over the systematic human rights abuses in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, while underscoring the need for the United Nations to ensure implementation of Security Council resolutions.

The two sides had useful discussions on the on-going process of UN Security Council reform and the need for this process to be led by Member States and consensus-based way forward.

The Foreign Minister also briefed the President on steps taken by Pakistan to pursue a vision of partnership for peace and shared prosperity.

NA: (NA passes resolution on declaring drought stricken districts of Balochistan as calamity affected)

ISLAMABAD:The House on Friday passed a resolution demanding that all the drought stricken districts of Balochistan be declared as calamity affected.

The resolution was moved by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan.

The resolution noted that the people of eighteen districts in Balochistan are facing great difficulty due to drought. Some people have also lost their lives as a result of situation prevailing in these districts.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan said a national consultative workshop is being organized for the assistance of drought hit areas of Balochistan and Sindh.

He said international donors will also be invited to attend the workshop.

He said the National Disaster Management Authority and provincial and district authorities are working to provide relief to the calamity hit people.

Earlier, the National Assembly was informed on Friday that the government has decided to forcefully raise Kashmir dispute as a humanitarian issue at the international level in order to unmask the Indian abuses in the occupied territory.

Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs Andleeb Abbas told the house during question hour that Kashmir Solidarity Day on 5th February will be observed this year not only in Pakistan but also abroad including London.

She said we have also invited the OIC to organize a conference on Kashmir in Islamabad or any other place to highlight the plight of oppressed Kashmiri people.

The Parliamentary Secretary said Prime Minister Imran Khan raised the issue of recent Indian brutalities in occupied Kashmir with the UN Secretary General.

She said Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi during his address at the UN General Assembly session also exposed Indian abuses.

She said international activists including a delegation of British MPs have compiled their stories and reports on gross human rights violations in occupied Kashmir.

The parliamentary secretary said 2018 was one of the deadliest years in occupied Kashmir in which Indian occupation forces killed more than 350 innocent Kashmiris and blinded and maimed many more including women and children.

The parliamentary secretary also condemned Indian provocations on the Line of Control.

She said we have repeatedly invited the UN inspectors to visit the LoC and see for themselves as to which country is violating the ceasefire.

She said Indian propaganda of carrying out surgical strikes inside Pakistan was also negated by its own media as a mere drama.

Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs Andleeb Abbas said the present government has reset and reinvigorated relations with Saudi Arabia and UAE over the last five months.

She said the agreements signed with both the countries are quite open. She said Saudi Arabia and UAE have provided balance of payment support package of three billion dollars each on concessionary rates.

She said Saudi Arabia has also agreed to provide oil to Pakistan on deferred payment for three years.

The Parliamentary Secretary said Saudi Arab has evinced interest to establish an oil refinery in Gwadar.

She said this ten billion dollars investment will create job opportunities for our youth and help in the development of Gwadar.

Andleeb Abbass said UAE is also interested to invest in different sectors of the country.

She said we have also signed several agreements with China in diverse fields including science and technology which will help further strengthen relations with China.

Parliamentary Secretary for Textile Aliya Hamza Malik told the House that government is giving priority to bring value addition in the textile sector.

She said the textile is contributing greatly to the economy and it will be developed on modern lines after consultations with the relevant stakeholders.

Parliamentary Secretary for Commerce Shandana Gulzar Khan told the house that a new strategic trade policy framework is being evolved with focus on reducing cost of production and encouraging investment into export oriented sector.

She said a national tariff policy is also being finalized with the aim to encourage value added exports of the country.

Minister for Inter Provincial Coordination Fehmida Mirza said sports will be promoted in the erestwhile tribal areas with the cooperation of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.

She said the tribal people have great talent in different sports and this needs to be exploited by building sports infrastructure.

The National Assembly adopted a motion authorizing the Speaker to constitute a committee of parliamentary leaders to regulate the conduct of members.

The motion to this effect was moved by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan.

The committee will oversee and examine the matters relating to the conduct of members as per rules and practices. It will examine complaints concerning the alleged breach of code of conduct by the members.

The committee however will not take up any matter or complaint merely based on unsubstantiated media report or any matter which is sub judice in a court of law.

Responding to a calling attention notice regarding the grievances of farmers for not timely exporting vegetables and fruits, Parliamentary Secretary for Commerce Shandana Gulzar Khan said the federal government is holding negotiations Punjab government to provide relief to the potato farmers.

She said there has been a surplus production of potato this year and steps will be taken to protect the interest of the farmers.

She said the commerce ministry is also striving to encourage investment in agro-food and yesterday’s announcement of investment amounting to two million dollars by Cargill is testimony to the efforts made by her ministry.

The Parliamentary Secretary told the House that fruits’ exports rose by 22.8 and vegetables by 47.9 percent last year.

Center not serious in Sindh uplift, blames Murad

KARACHI:Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that the federal government was not interested in development of Sindh; this why almost all federally-funded projects in Sindh province have either been abandoned or but on the back burner.

In this state of affairs the province of Sindh was left with no options but to raise voice at appropriate forums in the first phase and then the options were open to stage protests in the assemblies.

This he said on Friday while presiding over a meeting to review progress of Nai Gaj Dam, Darawat Dam and rehabilitation of Sukkur Barrage.

The meeting was attended by Member ECNEC Nisar Khuhro, Chief Secretary Mumtaz Shah, Chairman PandD Mohammad Waseem, Special Assistant to CM on Irrigation Ashfaq Memon, Principal Secretary to CM Sajid Jamal Abro, Special Secretary Agriculture Shakeel Shaikh, Special Secretary Irrigation Aslam Ansari and other concerned officers.

The chief minister said that the federal government has taken out important project of Sukkur Barrage Rehabilitation and Modernization from it PSDP and surrendered its Rs100 million to Ministry of Planning and Reforms which was injustice with the people of Sindh.

Sukkur Barrage is the life line of our agro-economy and the provincial government had got approved from the federal government after hectic efforts,” he lamented.

Chairman PandD Mohammad Waseem told the chief minister that he had conveyed annoyance of the chief minister to the federal government and now they have sent a letter to him for re-adjustment of the Sukkur Barrage scheme.

Shah took up another scheme of Nai Gaj and said it was launched by the federal government for Rs16.9 billion in 2009 with the objective to conserve water resources for the irrigated agriculture development, protection from flood waters and hydropower generation. The construction of the dam was for arrest of flood water flowing through Nai Gaj Hill torrent so that 22,962 hectares land could be irrigated.

He said that in 2009 the cost of the project was Rs16.924 billion in which Rs1.56 billion was provincial government share for rehabilitation component. The scheme was revised in 2012 at a cost of Rs26.23 billion in which provincial government share was fixed at Rs1.89 billion. The second revision was made in January 2019 for Rs41.79 billion and now the federal government was asking Sindh government to pay Rs22 billion share. “This is not possible for us and we are of the view that federal government must complete its projects it has launched in Sindh,” Murad Ali Shah said.

He urged Nisar Khuhro who is Sindh’s ECNEC member to discuss the issue in the ECNEC meeting to be held in Islamabad on January 23. “Our stance is very clear and convey them rankly,” he said.

It may be noted that Nai Gaj project is located in District Jamshoro and it flows from Hill and drains out in Manchhar Lake after flowing through arid zone of Kachho area.

Another project discussed in the meeting was Drawat Dam project. This project is located is a concrete Gravity Dam across Nai Baran River near Jhangri village of Taluka Thano Bolakhan, District Jamshoro. The federal government had launched this project for Rs3.17 billion in 2010 for storage of 150 Million Cubic Meters of water to irrigate 10,000 hectares. It completion date was August 2014.

Murad Ali Shah said that the second revised cost of the project stood at Rs11.7 billion but the project is yet to be completed. “This slow pace shows that federal government is not serious to complete its projects in Sindh,” he said.

The chief minister said that the other slow moving projects were RBOD-I and II and Rainee Canal. He also said that the the federal government should allocate 1200 cusecs (650 mgd) additional water for Karachi city.

Improving quality of PTV Parliament channel discussed

Islamabad:Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser said that media should play its due role in promoting moral values and for the progress as well as development of the society. He expressed these views while talking to the Minister of Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain in a meeting at Parliament House on Friday.

Improving the quality of PTV Parliament channel and matters pertaining to other mutual interest were discussed in the meeting. Managing Director PTV Arshad Khan was also present on the occasion.

Speaker said that the role of media in present time is of extreme importance and it is considered as the fourth pillar of the state all over the world. He said that role of media has been increased due to increased use of Social media which has made this world a Global Village and now any incident happened can be reached with just one click. He said that media was playing the role of bridge in highlighting public issues and their reaction on the government policies and policies being devised by the government for the welfare of the masses.

He emphasized the need for freedom of media for transparency in institutions and for elimination of corruption. While talking about raising the standard of PTV channel, he said that it was necessary to telecast the proceedings of the House as to make the people aware about the performance of their representatives. He directed to device mechanism for up gradation and improvement of broadcasting. He stressed upon the need for restoration and improvement in the broadcast of PTV.

Asad Qaiser said that due to its quality broadcasting in past PTV was considered as a family channel. He said that moral values should be adopted in PTV broadcasting and programs related to history and general knowledge should telecasted as to make the future generation aware and connected with the past. He stressed the need for provision of equal opportunity to representatives of all political parties on PTV. He appreciated the role of press gallery to make people aware about the proceedings of the House and expressed commitment for provision of further facilities in press gallery.

Minister of Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain assured the Speaker for up-gradation and improvement in the quality of broadcasting of PTV Parliament channel. He said that steps are being taken for restoration of glory of PTV and improvement in the standard of its broadcasting. He said that incumbent government believed in the freedom of expression and all possible steps will be taken to ensure it.

CS meets UNODC delegation

KARACHI:Sindh Chief Secretary Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah Friday met with a delegation of the United Nation Office for Drugs and Crimes (UNODC), which was headed by Ms Sadia Awan. Both sides exchanged views on eradication measures for saving the innocent people from the drug addiction.

The delegation expressed satisfaction over the arrangements made by Sindh government in this regard.
