Indian SC expresses concern over misuse of sedition law

New Delhi, July 16, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Indian Supreme court has expressed its concern over misuse of the sedition law and asked the BJP-led government as to why this “colonial-era” law is necessary after 75 years of independence. This dispute about law is concerned, its colonial law, it was meant to suppress the freedom movement, the same law was used by British to silence Mahatma Gandhi, Tilak etc. Still is it necessary after 75 years of Independence?” LiveLaw d Chief Justice of India (CJI) Chief Justice N.V Ramana as having said.

A bench headed by Chief Justice N.V, Ramana sought the response of the Modi government on pleas including the one filed by the Editors Guild of India challenging the validity of the provision. He further highlighted the negative impact of the continuation of the law.

“The enormous power of this section can be compared to a carpenter being given a saw to make an item, [and who] uses it to cut the entire forest instead of a tree. That’s the effect of this provision,” the CJI also said. He added that executive agencies involved in misuse of the sedition law go scot-free. “Unfortunately, the executing agency and particularly the authorities misuse it. Take example of 66A which was struck down but people were arrested. There is misuse of these provisions, but there is no accountability,” he said.

Rajasthan Govt urged to bring law to stop hate speech against Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

New Delhi, July 16, 2021 (PPI-OT):In India, the Islamic organisation Raza Academy has urged Minister of Minority Affairs in Rajashtan to bring a law to ensure action against people who make insulting remarks about Prophet Muhammad (SAW). A delegation led by Islamic organisation Raza Academy chief Mohammad Saeed Noori met Rajashtan’s Minister of Minority Affairs, Saleh Mohammad and urged him to bring a law to ensure action against people who make insulting remarks about Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The minister told him that Indian Muslims are grief-stricken due to insulting remarks being made against Prophet Muhammad (SAW). ”Muslims can tolerate anything but not any kind of insult to Islam and Prophet Muhammad (SAW),” he added. In response, Rajashtan’s Minister of Minority Affairs Saleh Mohammad said that the issue would be discussed with the state’s Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and a bill will soon be passed in the legislative assembly.

A day earlier, Islamic organisation Raza Academy chief Mohammad Saeed Noori had spoken about the need for the law at a conference held at the famous shrine of Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer district. He stated that certain people make “unacceptable” remarks against religious leaders particularly Prophet Muhammad (SAW) just to gain cheap popularity. “They succeed to make headlines but on the other hand, they cause pain to people. Sometimes, law and order situations are damaged as a result of their remarks,” he said. In June this year, Noori along with Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi chief Prakash Ambedkar had held a press conference in Mumbai and urged the Maharashtra government to bring the same law and provide five per cent reservation to Muslims in the state.

NC asks IIOJK authorities to revoke ban on bovine slaughter

Srinagar, July 16, 2021 (PPI-OT):In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference on Friday took strong exception to the blanket ban on bovine slaughter on Eid-ul-Azha, saying such order should be revoked. NC Spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar in a statement in Srinagar while expressing dismay over the order said that it was conceivable to flag that the measure was unjust and inexcusable. Having such strictures on cow slaughter are well understood because of it being an object of veneration for a particular community but having such strictures in place for other bovines and draught animals is completely unfair, he added.

Imran Nabi added that even the Indian Supreme Court has in one of its judgments stated that a complete ban on the slaughter of other bovine cattle and draught animals after they ceased to yield milk and stop working, cannot be supported as reasonable in the favour of public interest. The blanket ban, he further said, will give another vehicle of intimidation to various unscrupulous elements to bully and pose a threat to the lives of Muslims associated with the trade and transport of bovine animals, he added.
