Cloudy weather: Several flights delayed at Karachi airport

KARACHI: Cloudy weather disrupted the flights operation at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, delaying a number of flights on Sunday.

Flights to and from Lahore, Faisalabad and Madinah have been delayed, causing inconvenience to the passengers who wanted to go their destinations. AirBlue flight from Karachi to Lahore was delayed by three hours at 1:05pm instead of 10:50am. The PIA flight from Karachi to Faisalabad has been delayed by two hours and now it will fly at 4pm.

Similarly, the AirBlue flight from Lahore to Karachi will now reach at 1:05pm instead of 10:50am. And, the PIA flight from Lahore will now reach at 2:45pm instead of 12:45 pm. A flight from Madinah will now land at Karachi airport at 5:10pm instead of 1:25pm. As per airport officials, a flight from Faisalabad now lands at 8:20pm instead of 6:20pm.

Veteran journalist, historian Akhtar Baloch passes away

KARACHI: Senior writer, journalist, historian and analyst Akhtar Baloch was passed away in Karachi on Sunday after brief illness.

Mr Baloch penned several books on Karachi history including Karanchi Wala, Teesri Jins, Mein Balochistani, and Yehi Mera Watan. Members of the Karachi Union of Journalists also prayed for the departed soul. Baloch was senior member of KUJ and HRCP’s council member. Baloch’s friends, family members and well-wishers on social media expressed their grief on the sad demise of the journalist.

SereneAir resumes Lahore-Quetta flights

LAHORE: SereneAir has announced that it has resumed weekly Quetta flights from Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport, according to a report on Sunday.

As per the officials of the SereneAir, three weekly flights will be operated on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Pertinent to note that SereneAir is a privately-owned Pakistani airline that began operating services in January 2017. SereneAir operates scheduled domestic flights within Pakistan and its first international flight departed for Sharjah, United Arab Emirates on 16 March 2021.

CM Elahi announces financial relief for flood-affected

LAHORE: Chief Minister of Punjab Chaudhry Parvez Elahi on Sunday announced financial relief for flood-affected families of the province.

According to details, Chief Minister Punjab chaired a meeting regarding recent floods and rains and reviewed relief operation in flood affected areas. The chief minister announced that an amount of Rs800,000 will be provided to families of people who died due to floods. A committee would estimate losses and distribute relief packages among the deserving.

The CM has also ordered the rebuilding of damaged roads on an emergency basis and establish medical camps in the province. Flood-affected people would also be vaccinated against viral diseases. Elahi has ordered to distribute dry rations among people, while the administration has been ordered to evacuate water using dewatering pumps.

Mushaira held in connection with Independence Day

ISLAMABAD: The Department of Urdu, of International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) organized a Mushaira at the female campus in connection with the Independence Day celebration.

It was attended by famous female poets of the country. Ms. Ayesha Masood Malik presided over the Mushaira while Ms. Parveen Tahir was the chief guest. Ms. Abida Taqi was the moderator.

All the female poets presented their fresh poetry in accordance with Independence Day and the current situation of the country. Through their poetry, the poets paid tribute to the ancestors for their sacrifices and urged the present generation to follow their footsteps. The female poets not only recited poems highlighting the importance of the country but they also recited their famous poetry on the insistence of the audience.

On this occasion, on the request of President of Mushaira, Dean of Language and Literature Prof. Dr. Najiba Arif also presented one of her poems. Earlier, the in-charge of Urdu Department (Women) Dr. Saira Batool welcomed all the poets and the audience of the mushaira on behalf of the International Islamic University and emphasized the importance of Independence Day and termed it as a sign of living nations.

At the end, Prof. Dr. Najiba Arif appreciated the words of all the poets and thanked them for participation. He also appreciated the department of Urdu, especially the organizers of the Mushaira for the successful organization of the Mushaira.

Tribute paid to Miraj Muhammad Khan

KARACHI: A gathering of political, social and labor representatives was held at Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi on the occasion of the sixth death anniversary of the well-known socialist leader Miraj Muhammad Khan.

Nasir Mansoor, General Secretary, National Trade Union Federation of Pakistan, conducted the organizing duties of this commemorative gathering, Justice (R) Rashid A. Rizvi presided over it, while Khaqan Muhammad Khan, son of late revolutionary leader and leader of People’s Party, Akram Qaim Khani, who came from England, also participated.

Left wing political activists, journalists, lawyers, labour representatives and friends of MMK were among those who spoke on the occasion including Karamat Ali, Mujahid Barelvi, Mazhar Abbas, Dr. Tauseef Ahmad, Mahnaz Rehman, Habibuddin Junaidi, Zahra Khan, Azhar Jameel, Qazi Khizr, Anees Zaidi, Manzoor Razi Hussamuddin, Mumtaz Haider, Jafarul Hasan, Khaqan Ali Mirza, Khalil Qureshi, Comrade Rashid Memon, Dr Asghar Dashti, Comrade Wahid Baloch and other. Young vocalist Shehryar also presented revolutionary songs in memory of the revolutionary leader.

The speakers paid rich tribute to the struggle of one of great revolutionary leaders of our time and said that Miraj Muhammad Khan had played most prominent role in socialist and democratic movements in Pakistan. Khan fought tirelessly against the imperialist domination, feudal and capitalist system and the all military dictatorships imposed on the country. He remained a metaphor for the struggle for the rights of workers, peasants, oppressed and downtrodden sections of the society. He accepted Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s opposition for the sake of democratic and pro working class ideals, even though Bhutto used to declare him as his successor.

At a time when he was under arrest, military dictator General Zia offered him all kinds of support for the anti-Bhutto movement and the politics of ethnic division in Sindh which he rejected unanimously. He raised his voice for the end of dictatorship and the restoration of democracy and the constitution when prominent leaders raised the slogan of first accountability then election in Bhutto hostility and many of them even became ministers in the Zia dictator’s government.

Comrade Meraj Muhammad Khan also termed the ongoing bloodshed and interference in internal affairs of Afghanistan on dictates of imperial powers as dangerous for the region, especially Pakistan, and warned that the fire of religious extremism and terrorism spread in Afghanistan would one day engulf Pakistan as well which time proved to be true.

Meraj Muhammad Khan’s entire life was devoted to the promotion of democratic values ​​and for protection of the rights of oppressed and subjugated classes, due to which he was respected not only in the circles of the left wing but also among his worst right winger opponents.

In the meeting, emphasis was placed on adopting a united plan of action and extensive connections with the people to overcome internal weaknesses of the left movement and deal with the current economic and political crisis.

Pakistan’s imports decrease, says Miftah

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Finance and Revenue Miftah Ismail on Sunday said incumbent government’s efforts to reduce imports have finally borne fruit.

In his tweet, Miftah Ismail said imports in July were recorded at $5billion as compared to $7.7b in June. He said the coalition government is determined to minimize the large current account deficit left by PTI.

“Our efforts to reduce imports have finally borne fruit. Imports in July, as per FBR data, were only $5.0b compared to $7.7b in June. Given that we have pulled Pakistan back from the brink of default, our govt is determined to minimize the large current account deficit left by PTI,” he said in the tweet.
