Spokesperson for the Mayor Karachi and Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentary Leader in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Karamullah Waqasi, said on Friday that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) was implementing a series of development projects aimed at transforming Karachi into a greener, environmentally sustainable and modern metropolitan city.
He said these initiatives are designed not only to improve the city’s ecological environment but also to provide citizens with quality recreational, social and community facilities. Waqasi stated that, as part of this vision, practical work had commenced on converting the land of Aladin Park, located on Rashid Minhas Road, into a state-of-the-art Urban Forest. The project includes extensive plantation of trees and shrubs, while nearly 50 acres of KMC land have been dedicated to afforestation, environmental conservation and eco-friendly public activities.
He said the Urban Forest project will play a significant role in addressing the challenges of rising pollution, climate change and increasing temperatures in Karachi. Besides improving the city’s environmental conditions, the project will create a healthy green space where families, children and young people can reconnect with nature. Plans also include walking tracks, landscaped green areas, educational and environmental awareness programmes, and other eco-friendly recreational facilities, making the site one of Karachi’s prominent urban green spaces.
The Mayor’s spokesperson further said that, under the directives of Pakistan Peoples Party leadership and Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, modern community centres were also being established to cater to the growing needs of local communities. These centres are intended to serve as inclusive venues for social, cultural, educational and welfare activities while providing citizens with quality public facilities.
He informed that a modern Community Centre at Gizri had already been completed and would soon be inaugurated. Similarly, another Community Centre at Morro Mir Bahar is nearing completion and will soon be opened for public use. These facilities will host community events, educational programmes and welfare initiatives for women, youth and senior citizens, contributing significantly to community development and social cohesion.
Waqasi said the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation remained committed to implementing a comprehensive strategy focused on environmental improvement, urban development and public welfare. He added that initiatives such as urban afforestation, development of green public spaces and construction of modern community infrastructure reflected KMC’s commitment to building a cleaner, greener, healthier and more livable Karachi. He also appealed to citizens to actively participate in tree plantation drives and environmental conservation efforts to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
