61 % jailed in Assam are Muslims: Data

New Delhi, September 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):In the prisons of Assam, 61% of detainees are Muslims while the community constitutes 34% of the total population of the state.

Prison statistics of India revealed that there were 161 incidents of police action in Assam, since Himanta Biswa Sarma assumed the office of the Chief Minister, in which 51 people were killed and 139 others injured. At least 22 out of them were Muslims.

As per the data, in 2021, 30% of all prisoners in Indian jails were Muslims while the Muslim population in the country stood at only 14.2 percent.

Experts say that these statistics show that many innocent Muslims have been illegally detained in various Indian jails.
