Adib Rizvi Honored with Prestigious British Medical Journal Award

Country’s iconic surgeon and philanthropist Prof Adib Rizvi has been awarded the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ) award for his exceptional contributions to medical sciences in the South Asian region.

The BMJ, a leading publication with over a century of history, annually recognizes medical professionals and researchers for their outstanding services.

The Special Recognition Award ceremony took place in New Delhi, where Dr Sanjay Nagra, Co-Chair of the BMJ Advisory Board, presented the award. Dr Nagra applauded Dr Rizvi’s pioneering efforts in creating an equitable and accessible healthcare model in Pakistan, emphasizing his commitment to providing free, high-quality medical care without discrimination.

Dr Rizvi, unable to attend in person, expressed his gratitude via Zoom, acknowledging the journal’s role in promoting medical education. He urged the editorial board to support similar healthcare models in the region for the betterment of the population. He emphasized setting aside political differences for the welfare of underprivileged communities.

The Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), established by Dr Rizvi and his colleagues at Civil Hospital Karachi, has become a leading medical institution focusing on urology, nephrology, and transplantation. Dr Zulfiqar Bhutta and BMJ Editor Kamran Abbasi also participated in the event through Zoom, adding their voices in support of Dr Rizvi’s work.
