Electric Tram Introduced in Lahore, Karachi Lacks Standard Public Transport: Altaf Shakoor

Pasban Democratic Party Chairman Altaf Shakoor highlighted the severe public transport issues in Karachi and demanded immediate action from the government. Addressing a steering committee meeting, Shakoor compared Karachi’s inadequate system to Lahore’s new electric tram system.

Shakoor emphasized the need for a comprehensive mass transit network, urging the completion and expansion of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines like the Green Line and Red Line. He also demanded the federal government restore the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) with modern electric trains connecting urban centers. Furthermore, he proposed building underground subway lines in densely populated districts like Saddar, Gulshan, and Nazimabad.

Regarding private transport, Shakoor recommended implementing GPS monitoring and standardized timetables for public buses. He advised dedicated bus corridors to reduce traffic congestion and the formation of a unified “Karachi Metropolitan Transport Authority” to manage all of the city’s transport networks.
