Malaysia today announced a significant $200 million deal to import meat from Pakistan, a major outcome of a high-level meeting between the prime ministers of the two nations who also pledged to strengthen their partnership in diverse fields including defence, agriculture, and new technologies.
The understanding was reached during discussions between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, in Putrajaya, aiming to bolster the historic ties between the two countries.
Addressing a joint news conference, Prime Minister Sharif described the engagement as productive, emphasizing that both sides converge on almost all important issues. He welcomed the meat import announcement and assured that Pakistan would make all possible efforts to meet Malaysia’s terms and conditions.
Mr. Sharif expressed Pakistan”s desire to learn from Malaysian experiences in technology, IT, and AI, and to pursue joint ventures and mutually beneficial projects. “Pakistan is a great nation blessed with immense natural resources and the great minds,” he stated, adding that the country is focused on providing its youth with opportunities to acquire modern knowledge.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Ibrahim alluded to the deep-rooted fraternal relations between the two countries, noting that expanding economic cooperation has been a consistent priority. He confirmed that Malaysia has already enhanced its import of Pakistani rice and would now facilitate the import of beef.
The Malaysian leader also highlighted the scope for cooperation in new technologies and was appreciative of Pakistan”s stance on Palestine. He noted that both countries look favourably at the peace initiative of US President Donald Trump.
Earlier, the two leaders witnessed the exchange of several Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) to formalize cooperation in the areas of higher education, tourism, Halal certification, anti-corruption efforts, and the development of small and medium enterprises.
Prime Minister Sharif also praised the visionary leadership of the Malaysian Premier and commended the launch of the Urdu translation of his book, calling it a guiding framework for sustainability, mutual respect, and innovation.
