Geopolitics – India’s ‘Reckless Behavior’ Has Endangered Regional Peace, Pakistan Tells UN

Pakistan has accused India of endangering regional peace and security through “reckless behavior,” culminating in an unprovoked military aggression earlier this year that targeted civilians, a senior Pakistani diplomat informed a United Nations committee.

Exercising the right to reply at the 4th Committee Meeting on Decolonization Items, Asif Khan, a minister at Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN, stated that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognized disputed territory whose final status must be decided through a free and impartial plebiscite, according to official information today.

Khan reminded the committee that it was India itself that initially brought the matter to the Security Council. He asserted that New Delhi now refuses to honor its solemn commitments under international law and the Charter of the United Nations regarding the contested region.

The Pakistani representative detailed an incident from earlier in the year where he claimed India resorted to an unprovoked attack against Pakistan, targeting non-combatants, including women and children.

In response to the hostility, Khan said Pakistan exercised its inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter. He characterized Pakistan”s counter-action as a measured one, aimed solely at military targets, which resulted in significant losses for India, including the downing of multiple aircraft.

He concluded that it was Pakistan’s responsible posture from a position of strength, coupled with international facilitation, that successfully averted a more dangerous escalation of the conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
